SDUT Watchdog now renamed SDUT Chihuahua Looks like things are winding down for the Daily Fishwrap’sventure into investigative journalism. You don’t need a weatherman to tell which way the winds are ablowin’ when you see the kinds of non-stories the paper’s pushing. Among this week’s victims were:
  • The UCSD Geisel Library staff, who were given wrapped Christmas crackers at the outrageous cost of slightly less than $1 each.
  • On the higher end of things, SDUT Chihuahua revealed spending of $62 per person for the surgery staff from UCSD’s multiple medical facilities.
  • And, at SDSU, they sprung for $2,633 at Lips (the drag show restaurant) for faculty and staff at the biology department. We’re sure that the local family values people will be all over this once they get through working on Carl DeMaio’s campaign. If you want to look at the bright side of things, now we can be assured that the biology people at SDSU have received adequate instructions on what things go where.

There were tons of other “holiday parties” at our local colleges, which it turns out were paid for without using state funding or tuition revenue. Since they were unable to actually prove any misuse of funds, the SDUT Chihuahua’s dredged up some geezer who was, of course, outraged that anybody was allowed to have any fun.

Everybody else covered this already… But for those of you that haven’t seen the South Park episode making fun of San Diego, here’s the NSFW link: http://www.macbrosplace.com/jackin-it-in-san-diego-south-park-video/

Promises, promises….  Remember last year when Wal Mart came to town and promised to build a whole bunch of stores (a dozen, actually) and give everybody jobs and free ponies for their kids?  Well, we want you to know that Wal Mart sorta told the truth… they are building ONE smallish store in City Council President Tony Young’s district (at the Sherman Heights Farmers Market)… but when the Labor Council’s Lorena Gonzalez checked in yesterday, it turns out that the guys doing the work are not from San Diego. So much for the local jobs… maybe we can get Tony Young to make good on the ponies promise for the holidays.

What do foods sound like?…  British researcher Charles Spence has been looking into the burning question of how sounds modify our perception of flavors. (It’s a good thing he’s not doing that research here, what with our SDUT Chihuahua on patrol) You know, things like, if you’re eating bacon-and-egg ice cream, will the sound of sizzling bacon or farmyard chickens influence your perception of flavor? The answer is yes, in a general sense. Higher pitched noises, for example, create an expectation that appears to sweeten sweet treats. That’s why (in the good old days) an ice cream truck’s high pitched bells were such a draw, back before they became mobile pot dispensaries.

While we’re on foodie patrol… Did you know that there’s a blog that’s all about the flavors and sensations to be had from junk food? Well, now you do, courtesy of Cory Doctorow over at boingboing!. Welcome to the world of FoodJunk, where they bought a 22-year-old unopened package of Batman cereal on eBay and tried it recently. It was… not so good.

I was hoping for some kind of honey nut aroma remnants upon opening the bag. Sadly, the villain in this issue is The Plastic. He has taken over virtually all of Gotham. The thick plastic inner bag held up perfectly (take that Earth!) and did a great job of keeping the cereal dry and crisp, but the air inside was thick with chemicals. And not the kind that would put a cool maniacal smile on your face.

North Park elitists set out to prove OBceans stupid… The stiff pinkie set over at San Diego City Beat are bringing an Earth Day Trivia Quiz to the Raglan Public House on Bacon Street. You have until Thursday, April 19th at 7pm to rehabilitate your brain cells. Be ready to face tough questions—courtesy of CoastKeeper—and be sure to RSVP via Facebook.

The Mayoral contests, tick, tick… Just watch this video of Congressman Bob Filner trying to set the record straight on KPBS about statements he’s made regarding the Port of San Diego.

Breaking up wasn’t that hard to do… Nathan Fletcher’s decision to dump the GOP won him a nice slice of the “undecided” voters in a couple of local polls released yesterday. As Filner says, there’s still seven weeks left until the election. But as of today, it’s DeMaio and Fletcher going into a November runoff.

Re the poll that shows DeMaio and Fletcher in front: there was less than 600 people polled. The error rate is huge and basically it really doesn’t account for much.

Seems to me that the only people the Watchdog (aka Watchpuppy – some people like chihuahuas, Doug ) does research and exposure on are public employees. It’s in the private sector that most of the fraud, waste, and expense is seen. Could be an article for you guys.

And some of us like puppies….now Watchkitties or something similar might be a good name. Anna, what do you think?

Anna loves cats ! – She has – what? 7 of them? I’m certain she won’t go for “watchkitties”.

And some of us like the kitties, Jack…. The appropriate title is a little farther down on the evolutionary ladder.

It appears you caught my drift….

The Voice of San Diego’s morning report ‘dude’ also read the SDUT story about local college holiday parties and totally bought into the underlying premise that the UT was pushing suggesting that TAXPAYER funds were being wasted. Sucker! There weren’t any. Like I said, the closest thing they had to proof was some geezer complaining about anybody at UCSD having any fun.

Maybe we should just go ahead and privatize EVERYTHING. That ought to make them happy…….And I’m sure that’ll work out well for the 99%.

I just watched the KPBS interview with Filner, and it was very confrontational with the interviewer jumping into essentially calling him a liar at the very beginning. They spared over the Port of San Diego and Filner’s comments about it; he did seem to squirm but she still doesn’t understand his main point about the Port and maritime trade there.

He’s talking in generalities and the reporter is trying to trip him up with specifics. He does need to do more research on this major plant of his campaign. He says he’s challenging the establishment and he’s not surprised he is dissed by conservative blogs.

Where are the confrontational interviews by KPBS with Dumanis and DeMaio? Where is the reporter calling them liars for claims they’ve made? They’re not there – why? Because the major media in this town supports the Republican-dominated establishment.

KPBS supports the Republican-dominated establishment? Now this would be news if true.

My issue with the TV interview had nothing to do with the port (the story is weak sauce IMO), it was his condescending attitude.

Frank Gormlie April 14, 2012 at 12:35 pm

Yeah, he’s had that for a while. Although, the attitude of the reporter is very rarely seen in this town. I never see it used against, say, GOP candidates. Maybe they just refuse to do one on one’s like that, with assurances there’s no ambushes.

Global justice billions crave

On waves and tides of cosmic scale

Resolution now the call

a living wage for one and all.

Earths long-time shafted people roar

We Just Won’t Take It Anymore.

The working poor, the down and out

a risen people packing clout.

Fairness movements lead the way

People power here to stay.

The middle-class profoundly score

inequity shall rule no more.

Righting long wrongs one by one

disparity at last undone.

The fed-up masses fiercely vow

Economic Justice. Now!

Futuristic lively blends

pilot the progressive trends.

Trust ones heart evolve transcend

the Wisdom Way to comprehend.

The Common Dream now full force

a visionary, gutsy course.

Spring stretches to the stratosphere

as worlds of crucial change appear.

Peaceful revolution, Yes!

the human race to coalesce.

One Creator over ALL.

One last chance to heed the Call

Love’s the lesson. Life the school.

Peace On Earth. The Golden Rule.

Live the Lesson. Heal our Earth.

Imagine

Transformation now. Rebirth!

Spur the people stir the fire

Mobilize and walk the wire.

Back on track and off the dime

(Poem / lyrics written in 2012 by 73-year-old great-grandmother)

And Spring arose on the garden fair,
Like the Spirit of Love felt everywhere;
And each flower and herb on Earth’s dark breast
rose from the dreams of its wintry rest.
Percy Bysshe Shelley
