Women from all over San Diego County will rally in front of the US Federal Courthouse in San Diego on Thursday, March 8th, to support women’s rights to contraception on International Women’s Day. The rally will be held from noon to 1pm, and the Courthouse is located at 940 Front Street, in downtown San Diego.
The rally will address a number of recent attacks on a woman’s right to contraception and family planning:
- US Rep. Darrell Issa convenes a hearing about contraception with 5 men on the panel, and no women.
- Presidential Candidate Rick Santorum touts the “dangers” of contraceptives and that sex is “only for purposes of procreation.”
- Foster Friess, main donor to a super PAC for Rick Santorum, suggests women use aspirin as a contraception method.
- Rush Limbaugh, on a national radio show, calls a young woman a slut and prostitute because she speaks out in favor of birth control.
- Blunt Amendment narrowly fails in the Senate which would have overridden the Obama Administration’s new contraception coverage rule and allowed any employer to refuse to cover any kind of health care service by citing “moral reasons.”

International Women’s Day has been observed since the early 1900s on March 8. Every year, thousands of events are held throughout the world, including political rallies, business conferences, government activities and networking events aimed at inspiring and connecting women.
The San Diego event is co-sponsored by Women Occupy San Diego and Planned Parenthood.

The Occupella Chorus

There’s a new all volunteer female chorus in town with more gigs than they can handle. The “Occupella Chorus” sings familiar tunes, but rewords the lyrics to convey the message of social and economic injustice. A sample is “Occupy Your Mind” sung to tune of “Do Re Mi:” “Occupy your mind today. Learn what’s really going on. Me – an individual, Against a corporation.”
The women of varying ages are daughters, wives, mothers and grandmas who are all members of Women Occupy San Diego. They’ve entertained audiences outside the Civic Center, San Diego Rep and AMSD concerts. The group will be singing in support of women’s rights downtown on March 8 and against nuclear power outside the San Onofre Power Plant on March 11. If you’re planning a protest rally — you better book these ladies while they’re free and available.

For those – living in the 49th district – North County coastal up to south OC – there is an alternative to Darrell Issa – Jerry Tetalman of Carlsbad. He is endorsed by the Democratic party. JerryforCongress2012.com. Jerry is a health professional as well as a realtor and supports women’s rights.

Oh my God! What a stupid and inane remark by Santorium. Desire to make love is a natural, physiological function of the human body. “Hey honey, it’s time we make an appointment to get it on so we can have that child we have been talking about.” I’ll call the Doctor so I can get the Viagra. Maybe Santorium can fill us in on how he manages his physiological responses and learn something new about the human body.
Honestly if you want to bury the GOP, just let them keep saying and doing stupid shyte like this. At the very least it’s good for a laugh.
The fact that International Women’s Day does not draw thousands into the streets, in all major cities, these days, is owing to the incredible hoax both political parties, and their masters, have played on everyone remotely concerned about women’s rights. They have succeeded, hand in hand over the last 30 years in turning failure into repeated victories against women, the world over. It ain’t about a d-brain called rush or women hating pastors or even the vatican guy and other charlatans, it’s about being used and abused into thinking their goals are our goals. Thousands and thousands of articles, books , movies, tv series, female cop shows, female judges on prime time, all the 1% can muster, including all the fetish goods…fashion and jewelry and red carpet interviews, directly aimed at preventing an organized opposition or leadership from evolving.
What’s that old popular phrase “you’ve come along way baby, and there’s no going back” Women have been had. Only a mass independent Women’s movement can halt the progress of the 1%, ruling class , including their women, from driving us further down and begin to regroup the forces necessary to defeat this common enemy, made stronger from their dominance of their women’s issues. This ain’t what Michelle, Hillary, Diane, or Barbara think but we know it’s true. Women as a whole are not better off. All the phony and irrelevant examples of progress are a shill disguising rampant inequality.
When do women you call it quits and stop enabling the abusers, male and female? Workers, of both sexes know the dparty is not a friend of labor (wage slaves, whether union or not) or women’s rights.
Oh yes, there are women heading the U.S. Department of State from both parties. There are women combat pilots, now, bombing the shit out of the women, in how many countries? There is no shortage of women Senators in California, (sorry, what party?). Women are right up there at the top echelons of business, billionaire CEO”s and the like.
Against all this so-called hype of achievement, where are our sisters today? Out of work, out of unemployment insurance, saddled with debt and kids, alone, killing their bodies, dulling their minds, or just struggling, always struggling, getting picked off by all the vultures.
I’m going to the Fed building tomorrow, no less enthused than I was, in the Bay Area, in 1972……. to protest not celebrate….that’s the problem, our problem. Women’s power is not spent, but it is in bad shape. Sisters, what ever it takes, do it. Get back on the road to Liberation.

I actually know some women Marines who want to be scout snipers and are upset that those billets are not yet opened up to females. The simple fact is, in a world where men and women are truly equal there will be women who are greedy, power hungry, classist towards the less fortunate, more than willing to step over others to get ahead, want to go into the military and fight in wars, be dirty cops (like posted in the Rag here), pretty much all the same imperfections that any man can have.
You are right there. I see it all the time.
But to many I am sure this would be an eye opener. Do you think any of the women politicians get there by means of “mom and apple pie?”
It may be an eye opener to many but honestly that is hard for me to understand why. It’s not like men are human and all women are cyborgs who think and act one certain way. I assume most women want equal opportunities and pay in the working world and reproductive rights (even then there many who are adamantly pro life anti abortion). Beyond that, none of those things I mentioned will have anything to do with other aspects of their morals, values, political leanings, etc. And to your question, no one gets into politics by means of mom and apple pie.
Of course, women want equal opportunities, but show me some who have these opportunities that do not have the same agendas as men, such as women managers, upper level management, and CEOs. Man or woman, if power is what they want, they are humans with the same agenda. I do dislike the term feminist also. It seems like “poor little me.” But how many women have taken the initiative to get what they want. I understand, being a woman, there are some circumstances beyond their control. Lack of education, a myriad of things. How many black women are in positions of power, or have good jobs and their husbands or boyfriends are in jail? I definitely agree with health coverage for contraceptions. Some things I feel are fair, or unfair. Is it the Stones that sing the song “you can’t always get what you want.”
I’m ready for the slings and arrows.
Not to bring up the military thing again, but this is an article from last month in the UT about increased roles for women in the military. Maybe you’ve read it already. Read FB comments below. You really have to think about what many of these women go through. On one end they have to deal with the sexist attitudes of backwards thinking men (and even some women) but also have to deal with a lot of people who are not big fans of the military these days. Many of those very people find it particularly troubling that any women would want to put herself in that environment.
