The boogie man is coming!… From Channel 10 TV news comes this story designed to make you Very Afraid: “Study Lists San Diego County As Terrorism Hot Spot”. So few facts, so much air time. A fine example of the Worst Station in local television news’ unfailingly low standards, this story makes KUSI look positively informed.
So many stories, so little time… We’ll start off this morning with the Washington Post story featuring our own Rep. Darryl Issa that tells us about “Thirty-three members of Congress [who] have directed more than $300 million in earmarks and other spending provisions to dozens of public projects that are next to or within about two miles of the lawmakers’ own property.” Of course the part about Issa ran in the NY Times a while back and was vehemently denied by the Congressman. It should be pointed out that not all of the $300 million went to GOPers. Just most of it.
Another Primary Day… Republicans in Colorado, Minnesota, and Missouri will vote today to make their choice for who should be the party’s presidential nominee. Gov. Mitt Romney is feeling heat from former senator Rick Santorum, who could pick up victories in two of the three states today.
Latinos in Nevada just aren’t feeling the GOP love, as Daily Kos reports that turnout among Hispanics actually declined in the most recent face off: “26.5 percent of Nevada‘s population is now Latino, and almost half of the state’s growth over the past decade has come from this community… Yet at a time when Nevada is becoming browner, and its Latinos more active, its GOP is becoming whiter—a sure-fire recipe for long-term irrelevancy.” Gov. Romney “won” the recent caucus balloting in Nevada, garnering 33,000 votes out of the 471,000 registered republican in the state. The low turnout was blamed on “nice weather” and the fact that people were stocking up for the SuperBowl.
Social Media Mavens… Meanwhile, over at Think Progress we learn that Wikipedia manipulation is an art that Gingrich shares with his former protégé Carl DeMaio. And then there’s the hilarious story about the Louisiana GOP Congressman who posted a story lifted from the satirical Onion website about Planned Parenthood.
Bad News for the GOP… From the Sacramento Bee: “Since just before the last California presidential primary, the proportion of voters registered as Republicans has fallen from 33.5 percent to 30.4 percent, according to new figures from the California Secretary of State.” SDRostra is trolling for suitable conservative candidates to oppose the re-election of SDUSD Board of Trustees members Richard Barrera and John Evans. With all the glib critiques that have been put out for about the problems of the school district, you’d think there’d be a plethora of candidates lining up… but so far… [crickets]
From the Karl Rove is Full of Shit Department… It seems that everybody’s favorite GOP hack has his undies in a bunch over the two minute Chrysler ad featuring Clint Eastwood that aired during the Super Bowl halftime: “This is a sign of what happens when you have Chicago-style politics, and the president of the United States and his political minions are, in essence, using our tax dollars to buy corporate advertising and the best wishes of the management, which is benefited by getting a bunch of our money that they’ll never pay back.”
As The Detroit News was quick to point out yesterday, it was George W. Bush who wrote the first check to Chrysler. Chrysler received $4 billion on Jan. 2, 2009, (18 days before Obama took office) and $8.5 billion on April 30 (when Obama was president), according to this Government Accountability Office report (page 9) on TARP. From the NY Times: In all, the Center for Automotive Research (CAR) in Ann Arbor, Mich., reckons the government’s bailouts of the U.S. auto industry spared more than 1.14 million jobs in 2009, and prevented ‘additional personal income losses’ of nearly $97 billion in 2009 and 2010. Another 314,400 jobs were saved in 2010. The research organization based its conclusions on the potential impact of auto-industry collapse for jobs at U.S. automakers and suppliers, and ripple effects on the economy at large.
