Alley where victim of stabbing was found - between the AZ bar and Winstons - Monday (Feb 6, 2012) night. Screen capture from Ch10News video.

This much is known: there was a stabbing last night, Monday, in Ocean Beach.  Police found the victim, in his 30’s, lying on the ground in the alley between the Arizona Bar and Winston’s, and unconscious. The alley is between Newport Avenue and Santa Monica off Bacon Street.

San Diego Police Lt. David Rohowits stated to media:

“His abdominal organs had been eviscerated from a stab wound to the stomach. [As far as] our investigation right now, we’re certainly looking for witnesses, the victim was unconscious so we’ve been unable to get a statement from him.”

He was taken to UCSD Medical Center, and it is said that his injuries are not life-threatening. Witnesses told Ch 10 News the victim was at the Sunshine Company – a bar on Newport – earlier in the evening.

Also in that same bar Monday was a guy who had been kicked out of the Sunshine Company around 10:30 p.m. Witnesses told police that he was armed with a knife and had been threatening others when he left the bar. Police were called to the scene and that’s when they were directed to the injured man in the alley – the alley is behind the Sunshine Company.

Lt. Rohowits:

“We are not certain at this point that the earlier brandishing of a knife in Ocean Beach was connected to this incident that occurred about a block away. We’re not sure if it’s connected or not, [but] we’re certainly trying to track that person down.”

Dozens of people were interviewed and questioned by police, but supposedly, no one witnessed the actual knifing. Police plan on reviewing surveillance videos from the area businesses.

I’m not certain Lt. Rohowits knows what the word eviscerated means. If his guts were removed, that would certainly be life-threatening. If his would was not life-threatening, then we can conclude he was not eviscerated.

Perhaps there is so little violent crime in OB that the police are unfamiliar with the correct terms.

It sounds like the Lt. knows what he was talking about. However, the extent of the eviseration would have to be considered. If it was extensive, it would certainly be life threatening. Loss of consciousness sounds bad. However, listening to police radio calls and media reports, information is sometimes unclear and unreliable until further investigation. Hope the guy is okay. What a gruesome and yukky thing to have something like this happen to you. Bet you it will be a little time before we really know what happened. But I wouldn’t say that crime in O.B. is sparse.

I pulled up to the ATM there just after police and fire got there. Guy was over by the wall on the side of the Hidden Spa/back of Appletree. There was a small group of what looked to be 18 year old males watching, and I think police took one of them into custody.

I hope so. My history with OB goes back awhile. Have a soft spot for it. But this kind of thing happens everywhere.

Good grief. I just read the article about it on ten news. We won’t know until it gets sorted out. Remember the serviceman from Occupy who was killed in action, and then he wasn’t dead? Finally, they held the memorial for him and the truth came out.

It was pretty gruesome the way it was described on 10 news. “Sliced open?”

I don’t know if the kid was connected with it, or if he even ended up getting arrested, but they took his hands behind his back and it looked like cuffs were coming out.

If they have them, surveillance tapes from the Shine likely will be a big help… the cops need it. They are not the best at catching attempted murderers around these parts.

Do we have an update on the victim’s condition? I have been praying for him. I heard that a second attack, not as vicious, happened (after the stabbing) in the alley behind Winstons during set break around midnight. Crime happens everywhere, that’s true. But it is shocking when a person’s life is put in jeopardy for no reason, right on our own doorstep.

i’m not sure prayers will have any effect, but lets hope the physicians were on. i’d like to hear follow-up info. probably the news won’t report anything, unless the guy dies. sorry to be so cynical, but…
