A baby gray whale visited Mission Bay, OB, and the San Diego River yesterday. A paddle boarder caught the image to the right on his phone.
Channel 10News reported, that “as of 5 p.m., the whale was seen swimming in the water between south Mission Beach and Ocean Beach, possibly on its way out to the ocean. Whale experts and San Diego lifeguards identified the nearly 20-foot whale as a juvenile, or yearling.”

There have been no additional reports from today, so apparently the baby swam back out to sea to join the rest of the pod.

Update on baby whale near OB: SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) – It appears a wayward gray whale that was spotted in the Mission Bay channel Monday has made its way back out to sea Tuesday.
The calf was first sighted near the Ocean Beach jetty, before making its way up the channel.
Matthew Arsoni was paddle boarding in the water, and recorded his up-close encounter on his i-phone.
Doctor John Hildebrand of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography says the whale was likely part of a pod heading down to Baja.
wow! this whale was just a few yards from ocean beach! this is great, … but i hope it’s doing okay and that the high waves didn’t separate it from its mother. don’t forget, there was a mother whale and aborted baby destroyed by a ship that washed up on a point loma beach not too long ago.
