Activists representing many groups, including Labor, Occupy San Diego, MoveOn and Nurses, rallied yesterday afternoon on the Clairemont Drive bridge over Interstate 5 to bring attention to how much maintenance our infrastructure needs and the number of jobs those repairs could create. This bridge has been identified as one needing repair and has a surface rating of 2 out of 10 (any rating 4 or lower is deemed structurally deficient) and needs to be repaired now.
More than 18,000 bridges and overpasses across the country are considered to be “structurally deficient,” but Republicans in Congress have repeatedly refused to pass vital legislation that would put people back to work and keep our communities safe by rebuilding our nation’s crumbling infrastructure.
The march began at the San Diego Visitor Information Center parking lot with a chant calling on Congressman Brian Bilbray to “FIX THIS BRIDGE!” and continued onto the bridge where activists held signs above the guardrails to the supportive honks from many commuters on the freeway below. OB Rag staff counted approximately 350 people present.
