The San Diego chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists is hosting a DON’T MISS event!
Reporters and protesters (including our very own Frank Gormlie) will discuss the media coverage of the Occupy San Diego protest that began on Oct. 7 and has continued outside City Hall daily since then. The local angles of this global story have occupied Twitter, TV, newspapers and the Internet for weeks, involving arrests, business closures, crackdowns on camping in the area. We explore how the coverage has unfolded and discuss the story’s practical and ethical issues.

Doug, of course talk about that also. BUT this event is about the HUGE OBSTACLE we all face: the corporate “news” propaganda machine and corporate censorship of what the movement actually is saying.
How many newspapers and news programs have published or presented the full text of the Declaration of the Occupation of New York? It has been out for over a month. It is the official statement of the General Assembly at Occupy Wall Street, adopted after many hours and days and weeks of open public discussion. The movement is obviously a major WORLD news story. So, why are hundreds of millions of people not seeing the true expression of the movement on TV or in their daily newspaper? The answer should be obvious, but sadly it ain’t. There are fewer than 10 huge corporations that own and CONTROL the content of the wire services and the major broadcast networks and syndicates of newspapers. These corporations are, in turn, subsidiaries or inter-locked with even larger corporations, which nowadays are seldom primarily even news organizations.
Selling advertising and promoting popular support for the whole corrupt system is what the news industry is now all about. It is a MAJOR barrier to the movement for any democratization of society.
