I don’t know…were the Czechs squatting in a bunch of stinky tents, playing hacky-sack and bongos all day, styling themselves as a “movement”?
Speaking of the Nazis…the French Resistance was a movement. The White Rose was a movement. The Bolsheviks were a movement. The British sent their Army against the American Revolutionaries, and we killed them. That’s how these things go down.
Those folks downtown are simply “occupying” themselves. Their tactics look terrible, until you recognize they aren’t serious.

Seatrooper – interesting handle. Let me ask you: have you ever heard of Gandhi? You know he led a non-violent movement to oust the Brits from India. That is what this movement is all about – non-violence and a call to change the financial structure. Sorry you can’t get behind this movement as it is non-violent. All the things you cite were armed wars.

Oh, yes, I know you have heard of Martin L. King. He also led a non-violent movement against the Jim Crow system. Oh, and there was Cezar Chavez – he also … oh, well you get the drift.

This movement is utilizing a tactic successfully used by the Egyptians – remember earlier this year – as the US and Europe cheered them on, they occupied public space in protest.

I could point out the tactics of Guy Fawkes, your own avatar pic, was to blow up Parliament with barrels of gunpowder.

They’re opposing the richest, most concentrated power our nation has seen in several generations – folks who aren’t likely to give an inch for the sake of vague, self-defeating PR stunts. Get serious.

Non-violence is great. Who wouldn’t support that? But geez…shove superglue into a few dozen ATM’s at least! And next time the cops come at them with batons, dump a bottle of liquid Teflon on the street in front of them.

But so far, not even one flash-mob sit-in at a bank…

That is a great graphic! We should duplicate it and paste it all over downtown and in our neighborhoods, stick it in envelopes and mail it to mayor, city council, city atty., police chief, etc.

200 cops for 50 protesters sounds right. In a normal situation you want 2 to 1 for officer safety. In a riot prone situation you want one unit of backup for each officer there, making it 4 to 1. So yes, 200 officers for 50 protesters is by the book officer safety.

Oh, am I supposed to be outraged?
Also, that headline is terrible. It looks like a tween wrote it in 1997.

I miss when this blog was about the town I live in and love, not all of this crap.

oBak. You are not outraged? Your tax money being spent so frivolously? For someone who has a comment handle of “oBak” complaining about this headline – interesting…. And if this blog was about your town – did you do anything to help it? Like buy its stuff, send in a donation, or even a photo? Did you? Probably not. If you don’t help the things you want to continue, then don’t complain when there are changes. The OB Rag has been the first media in this unkempt paradise to bring us the message about Occupy Wall Street and then our own protests under the “occupy” rubric. People in OB are progressive and need and want this news and info. Why don’t you?

Mike Chek – now just hold on. Let me check our records … hmmm, let’s see… no, you’re right – oBak has done nothing to help us out over the last 4 years we’ve been publishing. No donations, no T-shirts, not even a bumper sticker. So, yes, Mike, you are correct – oBak complains now, but has done NOTHING for this blog.

How terribly un-OB.

I think I’m about done with this site. It obviously has nothing to do with ocean beach anymore, just a bunch of people with an agenda who want your money more than your conversation.

P.S. I was planning on buying shirts for my family for christmas, I’ve told lots of locals about this site, I did try to send in photos when asked about graffiti, and I used to love the articles about local people, and local going ons. Now this is just some sort of childish echo chamber.

It is pathetic, really.

Really convenient of you now to say, ‘oh, I was gonna buy some t-shirts, but now … I’ll take my ball home.’ We scrap by, dude, no one gets paid – and we’ve been doing this for 4 years – trying to give OB a voice that is not corporate tinged. And this is the way you treat us?

Really Seatrooper, you sound like one of those people that injects himself into a conversation just to rile people up and cause your own brand of trouble. I don’t know how anyone can be opposed to the expressions of frustration and desperation by the OSD and all the occupy groups. If you think they are smelly and annoying, I hope you realize they are the tip of the iceberg. There are many more on the edge of this situation that are not yet vocal. Maybe we are just hanging on to our jobs until they are also gone, then we will have the time to join the occupation. And by then we’ll be even smellier and more annoying to you.

I doubt that. After a few more crackdowns, the nature of the majority of protesters will become more obvious. The non-violence is a mask, concealing fear of actual confrontation. This is not a “justice or death” crowd.

The majority will melt away, having achieved their protest street-cred and the ability to brag and feel superior. The radical remainders, if any, will be dealt with using harsher deterrents a la the “weathermen”.

Hey – I’ll be the first to sympathize with their gripes. But as a protest movement, I think they need a lot of work. Pity they won’t organize…but of course, that forms a target.
