Rally and press conference this Saturday afternoon
Come join me, Patty (am I still considered middle-class?), and more than 50 middle-class women from throughout San Diego County as we hold a press conference and rally in the Civic Center Plaza at 4 p.m. this Saturday, Nov. 12, to announce their support for Occupy San Diego.
What began with a few friends a week ago has snowballed as women are signing up by the dozens on Facebook and SignUpGenius.
“We want to show that we are part of the 99% demanding change in this country, although we’re not sleeping in the plaza,” said Kristen Smith, of North Park. “We are fed up with the concentration of wealth and power in the top 1%, and we support the brave young people who are so dedicated to reforming our system.”
I meet a woman at the Bank action last weekend who shared her story with me. She is in her eighties and told me that she had never been politically active until a few months ago. “I am okay,” she said, “I retired 25 years ago, have a decent pension and my house is paid off, I live okay.” I told her that my mother is in very much the same situation as she, but I wondered aloud if their generation may be the last ones to able say that. “This country is in a big mess,” she explained and she shook her head in sadness. She told me of the plight of her son who, at age 61 had lost his job, his health insurance and didn’t have many prospects…
The women taking part are moms, professional women, veterans, senior citizens or middle-aged, married or single, from many occupations and areas – connected simply by their support for the Occupy Wall Street movement.
At the 4 p.m. press conference, we will deliver wheelbarrows of food and supplies to donate to Occupy San Diego, and several women will speak about their personal stories. The event will take place rain or shine.
