Council members Marti Emerald and Todd Gloria have joined 1,000 San Diegans who are pledging to go vegetarian for one week during the Animal Protection and Rescue League’s (APRL) 3rd annual San Diego Veg Week (September 25 – October 2).  This is Councilmember Gloria’s third year taking the pledge, and last year Gloria sponsored a resolution in honor of Veg Week, promoting local business and “compassion toward animals.”

Vegetarian eating is on the rise nationwide, and several new vegetarian restaurants have opened in San Diego.  City Hall will be buzzing during Veg Week, with several staff members completing the pledge alongside Gloria and Emerald.  Last year, Gloria told Vegan Mainstream that the pledge helped him discover veg-friendly restaurants in his neighborhood, calling the food “phenomenal… you would have no idea that you’re eating vegan.” Emerald says that she is excited to try new foods “and explore the many options to adapt to a vegetarian diet knowing that it will improve my health.”

During Veg Week, APRL will host a series of community-oriented activities designed to support participants in their goals, including nutritional lectures, a cooking demonstration, and socials such as a vegan ice cream party.  Participants will also receive veg-friendly product coupons along with simple, healthy vegetarian recipes for each day of Veg Week.  The week of events will culminate in a celebration on Sunday, October 2nd, complete with prizes and tasty vegan fare to congratulate the pledges on their week of healthy, humane eating.

Veg Week is a fun and engaging way to explore the health, environmental, and humane benefits of a vegetarian diet, and all events and information are completely free of charge.  APRL encourages everyone to take part by signing up at www.SDVegWeek.com, and asks those already committed to vegetarianism to sign up family and friends.  As Councilmember Emerald said, “if I can do it for a week, so can you!”

The Animal Protection and Rescue League is a grassroots nonprofit based in San Diego.  More information about the organization and its campaigns to promote plant-based eating can be found at www.APRL.org.

Loving Veg Week.
I’ve lost a few pounds so far, feeling more energetic and a lot less hungry between meals.
Discovering great food and thinking more about what I eat.
Thanks for this opportunity to eat healthier and feel better.
