Did you see anything from a hit and run near Abbott and Brighton Sunday night (Aug.14th)?
An OBcian has requested help from our readers, as a friend of theirs was a victim of a hit and run around Abbot and Brighton Sunday night, about 10pm. That would be the evening of August 14th.
Unfortunately, the victim suffered head and facial injuries and can’t remember anything other than headlights coming straight at him. An anonymous person called it in saying that man had fell and hit his head on a parked car. Obviously, that is not the case.

Strange Loud Noise Late at Night
A reader has written in saying that “there was a crazy loud noise that went off at 1:45am sharp on the corner of Brighton and Cable,” Monday night – August 15th. He says:
“I went outside last night to around 15 or so neighbors on all sides of intersection (all men in our underwear) asking WTF?”
The reader claims that it also happened last week at 1:48am sharp ( he checked his phone).

I’ve heard the bangs – I didn’t hear the one this week, but there were two last week, one up the hill a bit and another down near Cape May and Sunset Cliffs, each also accompanied by a bright flash according to my neighbors who were outside at the time. A friend with a scanner said it was reported as a shotgun blast, however it seemed too loud to me even for a 12 gauge.
Some kind of big firecracker (bigger than an M-80) IMO.
There was another loud bang about 2 weeks ago at the corner of Cape May and Cable outside my bedroom window. It literally shook me out of slumber and first thought was “bomb.” I checked immediately to make sure my kids were alright. It took place at 11:30 in the evening, and it looked like somebody (or people) lit off an explosive device on top of an unused US Mail drop off box. After the incident, there was a rather significant dent in the metal in the top of the box, as well as explosive material residue. The Postmaster General was out the next day asking me and another neighbor who was awake about what happened. The incident brought out about 50 neighbors as we all thought it was a bomb, like underneath a car. A SDPD helicopter was over the area within minutes and we turned on our SDPD scanner to catch the communication. Not kidding, SDPD was talking back and forth, not knowing what was going on, they were also worried that it was a terrorist act…and should they consider bringing in military prescence in case further happenings occurred. That was really freaky.
A week ago I was up late and heard another similar sound in the alley way between Brighton and Cape May, between Sunset Cliffs and Cable. Brought out about 10 people into the alley way.
I was really concerned if explosives are being used in a densely populated area, why SDPD was not on the streets? They weren’t…

Momma – last week’s explosion went off on Wednesday night at 1:48am. I though the explosion was in the alley in-between Brighton and Long Branch – I thought it was a transformer but it wasn’t. Last night, by pure chance, I woke up to head to the lou and at 1:45am I saw out my window a bright flash followed by a huge bang (which, again caused numerous car alarms to sound). I opened the door not a minute late and saw nothing – except for ten of my neighbors in their underwear (as was I) in the street. Some were speaking about a neighborhood watch.
WHAT IS GOING ON?
Something set the dog off early this morning and got him howling, must have been this noise. I know something knocked me right out of deep sleep, but I didn’t know what. Interesting…..
We had something similar down on del monte in the alley a bit ago around 4am; a bright flash followed by a few really loud bangs. I called in to 911 and then followed up in the morning and was told it was flash grenades when the police were issuing a no-knock warrant. I’m guessing it might have been the same.
Me and my brother were grabbing something from jack in the box drive thru last night and heard the loud boom also. it was preceded by a flash seconds before.
Also heard and saw something similar last week.

Were cops using flash grenades to invade a house (warrant or no warrant), one would probably see the vehicles nearby. Usually, cops invade ten or twelve in numbe, don’t they?

Anyone remember cherry bombs (a large, loud firecracker)? When I was in high school, I had a friend who lost an eye to one of those things. The description of noise and flash (not that I saw very many cherry bomb explosions…) sounds similar.
Firecrackers are a nightly nuisance in the neighborhood area bordering Robb Field. Sometimes they are clearly being set off on one of the main roads and sometimes it sounds a bit more distant such as Robb Field or Dog Beach. Not talking about Sea World firecrackers (though I don’t care for those either. But at least they start at exactly the same time every night and end in 10 minutes. )
This is not a cherry bomb – more like a quarter stick of TNT.
An M80 (or blockbuster,as we used to call them) is equivalent to 1/4 stick of dynamite.They also emit a bright light flash when they go off. Tie a couple together and that’s quite an explosion.
Could also be some idiot making mini bombs in his garage with left over fireworks.
Yeah let’s call the bomb squad, SWAT team and get the DHS’ Darth Vader helos out for some high schoolers playing with fireworks. Nothing like job security and a reason to justify more funding for our paramilitary organizations/aka men in blue.
I’ve noticed this late night boom **** too and it’s been spooking my neighbor’s dog, but c’mon, let’s not get out of hand talking about bombs and terrorism.
Unless you enjoy the ongoing transformation into police state where we’re discussing the use of flash grenades in armed confrontations in domestic dwellings against citizens suspected of recreational drug possession and no one’s even batting an eye.
I’m on West Point Loma Blvd. and hear loud booms a couple times a week, so I probably heard the one referenced in this article. I figured it was somebody lighting off a bunch of firecrackers. I also noticed the Seaworld fireworks seem louder than usual this summer.
last week I was washing my truck on the street and just after dark an M/80 or whatever we label it went off down on your end of the block, pretty sure right at the corner of Long Branch, to the south of Rhonda’s building. Didn’t see who tossed it. This is not the same as the driveway drinkers who’ve had bottle rockets since the fourth, they’re small fry.
About 8 years ago we had repeated instances of what were probably seal bombs being tossed into the storm drains, that was kind of cool as the sound was muffled yet the whole neighborhood shook.
One slip, one overly active or short fuse, maybe a little alcohol, and a seal bomb will amputate some fingers in a very unclean way. Flesh torn to pieces, seared with nasty gunpowder burns but not seared enough to keep it from getting infected. If anyone knows whose kids these are, send ’em over to Rotten.com, surely there are a few images over there of similar accidents. Maybe print one up and put it on a lightpole in the area. This is the stuff that guys named Cletus and Elwin do before they graduate to blowing up stills in the deep south. Darwin awards catagory.
Since we’ve had so many and in so many different spots, I bet someone brought up a substantial load from across the border for the fourth and they got sold to different kids all around.
