Editor: New boundaries for the County Board of Supervisors’ districts are being drawn. Most of the new plans would have Ocean Beach and most of the beaches shift to Ron Robert’s district – areas currently in Greg Cox’s district. OB, La Jolla, Pacific Beach, Mission Bay, Crown Point and a slice of downtown with San Diego City Hall would shift to Roberts. None of the current long-term white Republicans sitting as Supervisors – all in their 2nd decade on the Board – would be threatened. Many people – including many Democrats – have given up trying to affect these County districts in the face of the GOP power-control over the Board.

Proposals to redraw the county’s political boundaries — a process that has long been fraught with power plays and legal challenges — would require supervisors to represent unfamiliar areas. But the three draft maps before the Board of Supervisors Tuesday are unlikely to alter Republican dominance of the five-member body over the next decade, experts and political observers said.
Redistricting occurs once every decade at the local, state and federal level after the census. The maps, which were recommended by a board-appointed advisory committee, divide the county’s nearly 3.1 million residents into five districts with about 619,000 people.
Despite a state mandate, the board has again drawn criticism from people who say supervisors should not be allowed to carve up their own districts — particularly when the city and state have independent commissions. All five supervisors are white, Republican, and have served together since 1995.
