There are two important happenings this week in Ocean Beach.

Friends of the OB Library Meeting – Tuesday, June 14th, 6 to 7 pm

First, there is the monthly meeting of the Friends of the OB Library. It is tonight, Tuesday, June 14th, from 6 to 7pm at the OB Library.  The Friends, fresh off their victory in helping to save the branch and other libraries around town from being shuttered or drastically shut down, are attempting to broaden their membership by having a meeting in the early evening – as opposed to having it during the day.  Friends President George Murphy and all the other regulars will welcome new folks with goodies.

OB Historical Society Presesnts: Charlie and Tonii… The Boys from the Other Side of the Hill! – June 16th

OBHS Presents on Thurs. June 16, 2011 Charlie & Tonii…at the PLUM Church, 7 PM at 1984 Sunset Cliffs Blvd., OB

As boys Charlie (Carlos Charlie LeGretti) and Tonii (Larry Tonnii DeGarcia) lived in Sunset Cliffs Azure Vistas tenement housing, which is now considered prime ocean front property. Also, they had both lived in the Frontier tenement housing where the old Frontier Drive-in was located in the Midway area (now called North Bay). Charlies’ (nick-named Taco), family owned the first Mexican restaurant in Ocean Beach.

Wonderland fascinated Tonii DeGarcia and played a major role in his life. The original Wonderland Offices, which were moved and converted into apartments, were his first home. Many years later when the building was condemned, he bought it and restored it, along with the original Wonderland sign.
