A new report from the Environmental Working Group shows that many water bottlers in California are not adhering to state law. A law passed in 2007, that went into effect in 2009, required that all water bottlers list the source of their water on their label and also provide 2 ways for consumers to contact the company to get a water quality report.

But here’s what EWG found:

The mandate could not be any more straightforward, but EWG’s inspection of labels on 96 bottled waters purchased in California found that only 24 percent comply.

More than a third did not comply with the law, failing to include mandatory data on the label or failing to provide a water quality report upon request, as the law requires.

Remarkably, the California labels EWG inspected listed the water source less often than labels from bottles purchased in other states.

Bottled water companies often claim their water is cleaner and purer than tap water, but yet they aren’t telling us where the water is coming from or helping us to see the water quality reports.

Let’s not take their word for it — you can click here to demand that water bottlers be held accountable to state law.

Now here is an example of nearly unbridled capitalism – laws are passed to protect the consuming public, but the companies just do what they damn well please, and there’s not enough of government to rein them in or even sanction the law-breakers.

So much for the results from the “small government” of the tea partiers coupled with the financial stress caused by the “big businesses”.

The laws are also in place for us to be informed. If the water bottle companies have no integrity, and we do not buy from them, they “take a bath” in their own deceit, and we find a new source.
