Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday will be commemorated on Monday and there will be events throughout San Diego over the coming weekend to celebrate his legacy.
The Parade: Zeta Sigma Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha, the oldest Black fraternity in America, founded in 1906, will be sponsoring a parade starting at Petco Park on Saturday at 10 am. This event, now in its 31st year, is filled with dazzling floats, soulful High School Bands, Drill Teams, Colleges, Fraternities, Churches, Organizations, Peace and Youth groups.
MLK Day of Service #1: Meet at 5450 Lea St. in City Heights for a clean-up project with the San Diego Labor Council and San Diego City Councilwoman Marti Emerald in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Monday, 10am.
MLK Day of Service #2: An interfaith event, now in its 3rd year, will kick off in the Morley Field area on Monday at 9 a.m. They’re gathering folks together for a day of service, not a day off. Come prepared to help clean up the area. Pre-Registration required.
MLK Day of Service #3: UCSD Chancellor Fox and numerous other volunteers for an afternoon of community service on Saturday starting at noon at the Sherman Heights Community Center in Sherman Heights. UCSD volunteers will help to rehab the center by painting, planting and creating a garden area. I didn’t include a link because they wanted pre-registration by January 12th.
Martin Luther King Day Celebration: A day of celebration in the form of music, dance and more at the World Beat Center in Balboa Park on Monday starting at 11 am.
The All People’s Breakfast: For more than 20 years, this extraordinary event has brought San Diegans together in celebration of shared values of peace, tolerance, and equality for all people. It is the region’s largest annual convening of organizations and individuals who care and work toward these critical civic ideals.
This year’s theme is The Media and the Movement: From apathy to activism, media as a force for social change. The keynote address will be delivered by Jehmu Greene, president of the Women’s Media Center, a New York-based, national nonprofit organization working to ensure women are powerfully and visibly represented in the media. In addition to Greene, the program will feature acclaimed local artist/activists, the Community Space and, for the first time, community bloggers (including Me—more on this in a separate post) and youth videographers.
Veteran journalist and news anchor Dan Rather will provide brief remarks via videotape, recalling his fateful April 4, 1968 reporting of the assassination of Dr. King and discussing the terrific challenges and revolutionary outcomes of television journalism during that time… as he experienced them.
