“Hidden Garden” Creator Lou Williams Passes

Louis T. Williams, who along with his partner Kathi, created a little corner of paradise in the Niagara Street plot of land that they had, and opened their “Hidden Garden” to anyone and everyone. Lou passed away last Friday, November 26, after a bout with lung cancer. He was 71.  See our tributes to his Garden here and here.

There will be a celebration of Louie’s life Wednesday, Dec. 1 at Beardley-Mitch ell Funeral Home, 1818 Sunset Cliffs Blvd. from 6 to 8 p.m.

City’s Plans to Chop Down the Long Branch Torrey Pine on Planning Board Agenda – December 1st

The Ocean Beach Planning Board will hear from the City on why the City believes the majestic and healthy Torrey Pine tree at 4633 Long Branch Avenue should be chopped down.  Residents and tree activists who oppose these plans will also be on hand.  The OB Rag and Richard Agee have been leading the fight to save the tree, and Agee has retained two Torrey Pines arborists who totally disagree with the City.  Residents of that block have been fliered about the Board meeting by Agee and Frank Gormlie, who urged them to attend.  The meeting begins at 6pm at the OB Rec Center, 4726 Santa Monica Ave.  Channel 10News interviewed Agee on Nov. 30th- go here for the online news.

Last Episode of “Terriers” on December 1st at 10 pm

The last of the 13 episodes of “Terriers” will be shown on FX Wednesday, December 1st, at 10pm. The show, filmed in OB, and about a couple of private investigators, has been met with rave reviews, but fans are waiting to hear that it has been picked up for a second season.  The “Ocean Beach Conspiracy” will hopefully be resolved.

OB Christmas Festival Auction – December 2nd – at the Sunshine Company

The Ocean Beach Christmas Festival Auction will be held Thursday Dec. 2nd at the Sunshine Company Saloon from 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm.  Mike James and other local celebrities will be running the show. Since 1980 the Ocean Beach Tree Festival Auction has raised over $100,000 for worthy Ocean Beach organizations and charities. The auction has not only been a great fund-raiser, but in O.B. fashion, has always been a little eccentric. Go here for more details.

Founding “fathers” of OB Comedy to headline special show at Winston’s – December 10th

The four original founders of the 5-year-strong Ocean Beach Comedy series perform on a special show on Friday, December 10 at 6 pm at Winston’s in Ocean Beach. The show is co-headlined by Steven Kendrick, Jesse Egan, Bob Hansen, and Andrew Deans.  Ocean Beach Comedy is proud to have been bringing the best comics in the business from near and far to perform every Friday night for nearly 5 years. As the show enters its 5th year of entertaining the masses, the hilarity and optimism is high for many more years of funny in the town of OB.

There is also now an open mic comedy show directly before Ocean Beach Comedy during the regular Friday night shows. From 6-7 pm, you can check out some young, eager, wacky, and talented new comics that are hoping to make it big. Anyone is welcome to perform, but the list is limited to the first 10 comics that sign up.  $5 tickets will be available at the door.

Pizza Port provides jobs for the disabled

The Ocean Beach Pizza Port along with its siblings around the County are providing jobs to disabled adults. In fact, Pizza Port was named “Employer of the Year” by the agency that coordinates  these types of jobs. Go here for the SignOnSanDiego article.

OB is the end for bicyclist who pedaled 25,000 miles  for peace

After eight years of pedaling 25,000 miles across 81 countries promoting peace, cultural awareness and random acts of kindness, Jamie Bianchini ended his tandem bicycle expedition Saturday with a 26-mile ride from South Carlsbad to Ocean Beach.  Go here for the remainder of this article.

“Stuff to Puff” owner quoted on DEA controlling synthetic pot

Diane Burdugo of “Stuff To Puff” in Ocean Beach said customers won’t be able to find those products at her shop.  “It is a nice portion of our business, but we’d be the first to remove it if it became illegal,” said Burdugo, who co-owns the shop with her husband.  Stuff to Puff is among several shops 10News found that sell the herbal blends.  Burdugo said the blends account for more than 20 percent of their business but said they will comply. “If it does cause a health problem, I think it’s a good thing to take it off the market,” said Burdugo.  See here for the rest.

5 Unit Cable Street Apartment Sells for $1.15 Million Cash

It’s nice to know, isn’t it that not everyone is suffering through this Great Recession. Lookie here: the five-unit apartment overlooking the Pacific Ocean in Ocean Beach at 1521-1527 Cable St. has been sold for $1.15 million, cash.  The buyer was Ronald R. Rieken.  The seller of the property  was Cable Trust #1521, TDR Servicing LLC as trustee. The 2-level approximately 2,974-square-foot apartment consists of six bedrooms and five bathrooms. It was built in 1951 on a 6,499-square-foot lot. In August 1990, the property was sold for $174,000. In February 2005, the property was sold for $1.5 million on $1 million in financing.  On April 1, 2010, the property was sold at a trustee’s sale at a value of $990,000.  Go here for the original article.
