Finally, we’ll get to see what the future public restrooms at the foot of Brighton Avenue will look like. There will be a public presentation of the new designs and plans of what the City calls the Brighton Avenue “Comfort Station” at Wednesday night’s OB Planning Board meeting.

The Planning Board will be determining approval or denial of the project’s conceptual design during the July 7th meeting at the OB Recreation Center, located at the corner of Santa Monica Ave and Ebers Street.  The meeting begins at 6:00 pm.

Members of the Board are enthusiastic about community residents, business-owners and property owners attending this opportunity to view the drawings. Here is our chance to not only see the plans but also ask questions of those who designed the new facility.

Some Background

The roof of the previous public restrooms at the end of Brighton Ave started to collapse and was demolished last year. In the fall of 2009 the Ocean Beach Planning Board formed an ad-hoc sub-committee that had members of the Board, OB Town Council, OB Mainstreet Association, and citizens of the community to give the City of San Diego input on a new facility.

The Ad-hoc sub-committee helped to choose an artist -Shinpei Stakeda – and architect -Kevin Defreitas – to develop a conceptual design.

Wednesday night, Elif E. Cetin, and Kevil Oliver from the City of San Diego Engineering and Capital Projects Department/Architectural Engineering & Parks Division, will join Defreitas and Stakeda in giving a PowerPoint presentation at the meeting.

The OB Project Review Committee voted unanimously on June 16th to recommend approval of the project as presented to the full board. The “Comfort Station” design that was presented was at the same location but not exactly the same footprint as the original.

The artist has developed a conceptual design where the art will be located on the ceiling. Showers will be located outside and it will be fully powered by a photovoltaic system (Solar Power).

The timeline for the restrooms construction completed is before Memorial Day 2011.

Go here for Wed July 7 agenda.

The public is always welcome and encourage to attend the OB Planning Board general meeting and give comments after the presentations.

i certainly hope the lack of comments here does not reflect a lack of interest in a government-funded facility for our community.

Well, Bob, it is just a restroom (with art on the ceiling? – this I got to see). Kinda hard to get too excited about it.

Looking forward to getting the public comment on this project tonight. Thanks to all of the Committee members who dedicated their time in order to help develop a plan to replace this critical service in our community.

See you at 6pm at the OB Rec Center!

why should my tax dollars be used for someone elses’ bathroom. this is socialism to the extreme. flush all you want people! use as much paper and hot air as you want. it’s just our money being flushed literally down the toilet. close all public restrooms and use the money saved for important stuff, like giving funds to convis. they at least provide jobs.

Um, It would be YOUR bathroom too Bob, unless you’re not concidered public.
I think the “art” will only tempt taggers to deface it… Skip the art. and put back another armored soda machine.

Clubstyle – I know him well and I think Bob was trying to be satirical – but obviously failed.
