oil spill gulf

Today at 6pm, there will be a local protest against BP (British Petroleum) – the giant oil company responsible for the current catastrophe in the Gulf of Mexico.  The protest will be at the ARCO station just in front of the Sports Arena, at 3580 Sports Arena Blvd.  ARCO is owned by BP.

June 8th is World Ocean Day, so the event organizers wanted to hold an action in conjunction with like-minded activists the world over. Apparently the local event is being organized by HuffPost Green readers, who are being asked to brainstorm and take action for helping with the oil spill.

Check out the HuffPost Green article here for some ideas on action you can take, as well as topics to discuss at the event:http://huff.to/9EGJsm

Dang, wish I could be there, but I’m out of town.

I heard on NPR that FAA is denying members of press the opportunity to fly over the Gulf spill for aerial photographs…a New Orleans Times-Picayune reporter asked for permission, and the FAA person asked what the purpose of the flight was…when reporter said “pictures for newspaper” the FAA person said no. Then the reporter asked the person issuing the denial to identify himself…turns out the person was a contractor employed by BP.

So BP, through the FAA, is regulating media coverage of the spill. Insane.

Wisconsin is as beautiful as ever…saw an amazing rainbow on my first day on the family farm, for example. Lots of progressives out here…Wisconsin has long been one of the most forward-thinking states in the union, so that rocks. And in general, people are just darn friendly…don’t have their guard up all the time, like so many of us in Cali. On Wisconsin!

Just added this link to my post today about the oil spill. I would love to come out and show my support. I’ve started my own boycott of Arco too.

Here’s a report from Matt the organizer:
We had a small, but very successful rally on Tuesday evening. 7 determined activist, including on 6-year-old boy, who drew his own protest sign showing turtles and dolphins stuck in oil, proudly delivered the message that…

#1- Unknown to most people, BP owns ARCO AM/PM.

#2 – Californians will not stand for offshore drilling in out state.

And #3 – General visibility to the public that we are aware, and now so are they.

But the BEST part of the evening is when the OB Solar Bus showed up out of nowhere. Suddenly, this brightly colored vehicle with local slogans and the question: “Solar Panels Provided By?” on the side, came screeching thru the BP station, honking it’s horn and exciting our group.

Thank you for the post, and support. I know it was short notice.
