David Wells is arguably one of the most famous (living) Ocean Beach residents and locals. Class of 1982 at Point Loma High, Wells became a major league baseball pitcher, amassing amazing awards such as a record of 239-157 during his twenty year league career that included a perfect game (1998) and two stints with the San Diego Padres.
Recently, he has received numerous accolades, having the high school’s baseball facilities named after him, as well as having the Dana Middle School baseball field renamed the David Wells Field. He also was just inducted into the San Diego Hall of Champions Hall of Fame.
Today, Friday, March 12, there is a fundraiser for Pointers baseball and Wells is planning on attending. It will be held at the historical Peckham estate in La Playa. Tickets are $95 and include a catered dinner and entertainment. For information, contact bridgetwear@cox.net.

A famous Point Loma High School (PLHS) alum, known nationally as “Boomer,” was honored recently when the school’s baseball facilities were officially named after him.
Major League Baseball pitcher David Wells, PLHS class of 1982, choked back tears Feb. 20 at Dana Middle School during a ceremony marking the christening of David Wells Field.
Speaking to a large gathering of students, school staff, family, friends and fans, Wells told of his days as a youth in Ocean Beach. A self-described “gym rat,” Wells reminisced about the endless days he spent at the Ocean Beach Recreation Center and at Robb Field.

as a lifelong Yankee fan, Boomer is one of my favorite baseball players of all time. Its good when millionaire athletes are actually relatable….thats hard to find.
The thing I love about David is he always danced to the beat of a different drum. In that, David epitomized Ocean Beach.
You can take the man out of O.B. but you can’t take the O.B. out of the man.
I was lucky enough to go to a benefit last night for PLHS Baseball. David Wells brought in many of his personal items to be auctioned off. They raised 20k for the school. The blonde boys played with David & Nina Son Lars sitting in to drum it was great. It was a great event.
He has not forgotten his roots.
