The National Weather Service has issued a high surf advisory and authorities were warning beachgoers to avoid the potentially dangerous conditions.

The advisory is in effect from from 4 a.m. Wednesday through 9 a.m. Friday for San Diego and Orange counties. High surf is expected in most areas, with sets up to 15 feet on west-facing beaches, according to the weather service.

Costal flooding is possible during the astronomical high tides early Wednesday through Thursday afternoon, the weather service reported. In San Diego County, the areas most vulnerable to flooding are between Camp Pendleton and Leucadia in Encinitas, between Cardiff and Del Mar, from Mission Beach to Ocean Beach, and from the Silver Strand south to the mouth of the Tijuana River.

Editor: Here are high tides at OB for next 4 days – Wednesday January 13 to Saturday January 16:

  • Wed Jan 13th: high tides at 8:51 am (+6.5 feet) and 11:16 pm (+5 feet);
  • Thursday Jan 14th: high tides at 9:31 am (+6 1/3 feet) and 11:47 pm (almost 5 feet);
  • Friday Jan 15th: high tides at 10:08 am (+6.2 feet) and 15 minutes past midnight (close to + 5 feet);

From the wave height, swell and tide charts I read seems most will hit north of here, but it gives the media something to talk about. We should get some swells WNW head high to overhead ( 6 – 10 ft ), but the extra high tide takes some energy out of the waves. All in all looks like some fun is on the way.

For folks that appreciate a graphical representation of the tides, Divebums (Ed Parnell and John H. Moore) has created a PDF calendar for 2010 available at: which includes moon phases as well as holidays.

What…..no people on the news from the Rag interviewing peoples flooded homes in OB. I’m sure this is all the City’s fault as well for not having mobile pumping stations. It was bound to happen….I guess all of the dog beach duplexes will be up for sale next week! Bring on the beach front property!!!

When one of those two-units comes up on Spray street I’m on it like stink on shit! 2/1 for Mom and Dad, and with the 1/1 street-facing unit it’ll be great for my daughter as a teenager…until she realizes Ma and Pa can bust down the door into her kitchen at whim…
