OB Flashes blueSaratoga Park Condos Delayed – Apartment Up for Sale

There’s a “For Sale” up at the apartments at Saratoga and Abbott. What does this mean for the planned 3-story 12 condos that were going in there ?  Rumor has it that the builder/ developer couldn’t acquire sufficient capital to do the project, and had to scrap the whole plan. (More on this later ….)

Where Is the Missing OB Fire Pit?

According to the Park and Recreation Department, OB is supposed to have nine (9) fire pits.  According to a recent survey by the OB Rag, our community only has 8.  So, what gives? Is it hidden behind a sand dune somewhere? Help us find the missing OB fire pit.

Lifeguards Do Cliff Rescues – Man on Sunday and Woman on Saturday

On Sunday, January 10th, at Sunset Cliffs, a fully dressed man jumped into the water and was unable to get out. A group of surfers pulled the man to safety. Once paramedics arrived, the man, with bloody feet, was vomiting and complaining of back pain, said Lifeguard Lt. Andy Lerum.

The Union-Tribune reported that  on Saturday, Jan. 9th, about 5:30 pm, a woman walking along some rocks with friends near Narragansett Avenue slipped and fell. She apparently injured her leg and needed help. But due to local big-wave conditions – the incoming tide and high waves – her rescue was very tricky and required a joint action between San Diego lifeguards, police and firefighters, said San Diego lifeguard Lt. Nick Lerma.

The unidentified woman was taken to a local hospital but was not seriously injured.  The high surf remained through the weekend, and was expected to drop off on Monday, the 11th.

Competition between OB’s Dog Beach and Coronado

For January’s Golden Local debate, NBCSanDiego is asking locals to vote for their favorite dog beach — Coronado or Ocean Beach. Voting lasts until Jan. 20. Let them know what you think. Click here to register your vote.

Short Film by Nazarene U Alumnus Could Get Oscar Nod

“Short-term 12,” a film by 2001 Point Loma Nazarene University (PLNU) alumnus Destin Daniel Cretton, claimed the U.S. Jury Prize for short films during the Sundance Film Festival in 2009. Now, the production may also become an Oscar nominee.

Last month, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced that 10 live-action short films had advanced in the voting process for the 2010 Academy Awards. Cretton’s film is among those making the cut.

The Short Films and Feature Animation Branch Reviewing Committee helped winnow the list from the 71 films originally qualified in the category to the 10 now still in the running. Committee members viewed all the eligible entries at screenings in New York and Los Angeles and made their preliminary votes. For the remainder of this article, go here to SDNN.

Longboard Association to Hold First 2010 Event at Ocean Beach

The Professional Longboard Association has announced it has changed the date and location of its first event of the 2010 PLA season. The PLA’s first event which was originally set for February 13-14 in Ventura, CA, will now be held on February 27-28 in Ocean Beach, at the Ocean Beach Pier.

The PLA schedule changes, comes from complications with city schedules as well as other established events scheduled in other areas of the world. Jeff Stoner, Executive Director of the PLA, explained:

“We felt pushing the contest back to late February would help the surfers with other travel arrangements and registration for the event. We loved being down in Ocean Beach in 2009 and are very happy to be headed back to that community.”

The PLA is schedule to other events in Costa Rica, Huntington Beach, Oceanside, and Seaside Reef San Diego throughout the year. Information about the PLA, its sponsors and all schedule information can be found on the PLA website, surfpla.com

Here’s the full 2010 PLA Schedule:

  • Feb 27-28 Ocean Beach (San Diego), CA- “C” St 2-Star
  • April 1-4 Costa Rica- Boca Barranca 3- Star
  • May 21-23 Huntington Beach, CA 6-Star
  • Oct 8-10 Oceanside, CA 3 Star
  • Oct 15-17 Seaside Reef- San Diego 6- Star

San Diego Reader: Sand Shift at “Big Jetty” Still a Concern for OB Surfers

Here’s San Diego Reader’s OB stringer Jimi Olsen’s take on the shifting concerns of local OB surfers due to the repairs at “Big Jetty” :

Since repairs to the Mission Bay Channel jetties began (a 350-ton crane capacity derrick barge and at least one support vessel have been at work there off and on since October), the enormous mound of boulders piled onto the tip of the southern jetty has had local surfers worried.

Their concerns are about the effects the increased size of the jetty, along with its modified footprint, might have on the quality of the waves. The fear was that swells might be blocked or refracted in such a manner as to ruin the waves for surfing. This has proven to not be the case.

As television news anchors continued to hype another “media swell,” hordes of surfers charged into the blue, hoping for the perfect wave (alone) on Saturday. The “Big Jetty” delivered head-high surf with excellent form to a daylong crowd of 30-plus surfers. One young surfer said it was “the best day all year” as peeling right-handers broke across the sand bar. Although crowded, the vibe in the lineup was mellow and there seemed to be plenty of waves to go around.

The next concern about the channel repair project will be the impact of tons of bottom sand that will be pumped over to Mission Beach as the channel is dredged to the proper depth for safe navigation. As this sand migrates off the beach and out into the surf zone, it will change the sand bars. This can be a good thing or it can ruin an existing peak. We’ll wait and see.

Sunset Cliffs Restoration Party – January 16th

The San Diego Audubon Society is hosting a restoration work party at Sunset Cliffs Park Saturday, Jan. 16 – 9 a.m. to noon. The event is to install about 300 native plants. Volunteers are asked to wear long pants, and sturdy shoes. Gloves, and tools will be provided. If you are coming, go ahead and join group about 50 yards south of parking lot along cliffs at roped area near where Sunset Cliffs Boulevard ends at Ladara Street. For more info call 619-224-4975.

SDNN has a wish lists story for 2010. Our City Councilman couldn’t think of anything for OB; Main Street’s Denny Knox and OB Town Council’s Jim Musgrove do better. http://www.sdnn.com/sandiego/2010-01-09/politics-city-county-government/local-leaders-offer-wish-lists-projections-for-a-positive-2010#

Thanks Doug for that link. Here’s what Jim Musgrove, OBTC prez said: Jim

Beach-y Keen
“I would like to see the continued cleanup of our beaches and that the fire rings stay. Because of budgetary cuts, they’re talking about taking (fire rings) out citywide. I know that the residents of Ocean Beach are going to be very active in the continued cleanup and the efforts to keep the fire rings in place.”

re: Competition between OB’s Dog Beach and Coronado

Both Dog Beaches here in San Diego rock! O.B.’s is bigger and easier to get to, but Coronado’s is a great resource too. Honorable mention to Del Mar’s as well!

If anything, more beaches should be set aside for dogs and their owners.

Yes, just like that episode of Seinfeld, O.B. doesn’t have a square to spare.

I’m guessing that nobody rolled it away, but how many are supposed to be at dog beach? I seem to remember at least 2…or at least there were.

OB Missing cat: We received this:
We have been missing our cat since Sunday (01/10/10) and I just learned today that there are other cats in the OB area that have gone missing. Supposedly there has been some suspicious activity in the OB area. Someone maybe stealing people’s outdoor cats. Our cat had a collar with a tag and never disappears for more than 24 hours. My boyfriend and I are heartbroken. I was hoping you could possibly mention this in the blog and see if there are other readers who have either seen something or have a cat that is missing. You can contact me via the OB Rag by leaving a comment or email at : obragblog@gmail.com
Thanks,
Caren

Our cat did return tonight but pretty beaten up. There is a sign up between Pescadero and Bermuda that there are at least three cats missing. Luckily our cat returned and I hope the other cats are returned.

I’m glad your cat returned. Personally I wouldn’t let mine out, but rather build a cat yard or play space for them. There’s just too many things that can happen to them in the real world including getting runover, caught and tortured by an animal hater, or kidnapped and sold to a laboratory. Sorry, I know that sounds bleak but it’s tough out there for little Puss Puss or Mittens on the city streets…yes even in O.B.

I usually see lost dog flyers around our town but if it looks like there’s some sicko in your area hurting animals, then I suggest getting your friends & neighbors together and looking out for each other. Might want to weed out the non-animal lovers though….

Cats are smarter than dogs, that’s why they don’t need leashes. I’ve had cats in OB for decades and allow them to run free – with access to my house of course – and have had no problems with them. Now, if you want to talk about the skunks and possums that run free to … in my house, that’s another story.

I don’t know about 1 being smarter than the other Joe, but I do know that cats that live indoors live far longer and healthier than those that spend their days out of doors.

That said, there may be something to our (O.B.’s) cats disappearing. I noticed yesterday 3 different sets of missing cat posters in North O.B. around Voltaire and Froude. I was also told of some condos that are east of the Famosa Slough where they poison cats because the maintenance people don’t like it when cats poop in the sand of their volley-ball courts.

I’m not sure why anyone would ever want to harm an animal but the sad fact is that not everyone has a sense of empathy when it comes to others, man or beast.

Keep your eyes peeled folks and if you see anything suspicious in your neighborhood don’t ignore it. Remember, Jeffery Dahmer started out torturing & killing small animals before he turned into a human killer and cannibal.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
“STAND UP IS DEAD” TO PERFORM AT OCEAN BEACH COMEDY
January 12, 2009 – San Diego, CA: Stand up comedians Ari Shaffir, Nick Youssef, Mack Lindsay, and Steven Kendrick are taking over Ocean Beach Comedy on Friday, January 29th, 2010 at 7 pm with a show called “Stand-up Is Dead.” Ari Shaffir tours regularly with Joe Rogan; Nick Youssef performed on the Axis of Evil comedy tour; Mack Lindsay works with Sacredcow.com and was the first comedic headliner on the Vans Warped Tour; and local comic and founder of OBC Steven Kendrick has worked with Ron White, Nick DiPaolo, Doug Stanhope, and many more. The show will be hosted by legendary local OB comedian Jesse Egan. Stand-Up Is Dead will then be continuing to tour and perform in Los Angeles and in Austin at South-by-Southwest. Stand Up is Dead is not a dark show, a dirty show, an edgy show, or a punk alternative themed show of any sort. It is a movement. A renaissance of sorts, Stand Up is Dead has the salt, or if you will, the realness that seems to be lacking in most stand up performances nowadays. There are exceptions of note, but not enough. More often than not, when watching a stand up performance, some portion of the audience is left saying, “Ok, I get it, that was a cute observation, an entertaining pratfall, …But who are you”? And it’s that group of people this show speaks to. Stand Up is Dead is a raw, real, and at times, artistically challenging performance. At the heart of it though, at the end of the night, when the curtains draw to a close….its just flat out effin’ funny. Ocean Beach Comedy is proud to have been bringing the best comics in the business from near and far to perform every Friday night for the last 4 years. The audience and level of talent in the shows keeps on growing at a steady pace, and Ocean Beach is looking forward to having the Stand-up Is Dead crew keep up that great momentum in this upcoming headlining performance. There is also now an open mic comedy show directly before Ocean Beach Comedy. From 6-7 pm, you can check out some young, eager, wacky, and talented new comics that are hoping to make it big. Anyone is welcome to perform, but the list is limited to the first 10 comics that sign up. Check out the guys of Stand-Up Is Dead at Winston’s in Ocean Beach at 1921 Bacon Street on Friday, January 29 at 7 pm for only $5. Tickets will be available at the door.

For those worried about flooding in OB next week: the city has made sandbags available to local residents in flood-prone areas. Sandbags are available in OB at both the Fire Station, located at 4711 Voltaire St. in Ocean Beach; and at the OB lifeguard station.

Channel 6 News says there is a limit of 10 bags per home and business. The fire stations will not have sand available, but people who get bags at the lifeguard posts can fill them with beach sand.

cool, maybe while folks are filling those bags with beach sand, that 9th fire ring will be uncovered ;)

The “Beacon” wd not print the following correction by me:

You need a new fact checker. In yr Jan. 7 issue, front page surf feature, you make 2 bad errors:
1.) The blue moon is absolutely NOT the 2nd full moon in a month, but a moon which actually appears blue, due to atmospheric particles from an exploding volcano.
2.) The full moon absolutely did NOT contribute to the large surf, which is caused by storms 100s or 1000s of miles away. The full (& new) moon cause unusually high (& low ) tides which may cause the large swell to do more damage, but that’s all.

Check yr facts next time……….
