THE SAN DIEGO COMMUNITY JOINS THOUSANDS OF CANDLELIGHT VIGILS TO DEMAND A REAL DEAL AT THE COPENHAGEN CLIMATE TALKS

As climate negotiators gather in Copenhagen, local residents will hold a candlelight vigil throughout San Diego on Sunday night to demonstrate public support for an agreement strong enough to actually slow climate change. This local action will join thousands of coordinated vigils happening in more than 100 countries as part of “The World Wants a Real Deal” campaign to demand a fair, ambitious and binding climate agreement.

  • WHO: The High Tech High International Roots & Shoots Club and citizens of San Diego
  • WHAT: This will be the only student-organized candlelight vigil for survival organized in San Diego for the organization 350.org. To let the City of San Diego and the world know that we’re serious about solving global climate change, we will march, candles in hand, throughout various points in San Diego including Point Loma, the waterfront, and downtown. Additionally, as night falls around the world, people across the globe will be holding coordinated vigils of their own, from a group outside the US embassy in typhoon-damaged Manila, to a crowd of thousands in Copenhagen, the site of the UN Climate talks.
  • WHEN: Sunday, December 13, 4:30-8:00 PM
  • WHERE: Outside the Trader Joe’s/VONS parking lot in Liberty Station, at the corner of Womble Road and Rosecrans Street (Google Map Link)

ABOUT “The World Wants a Real Deal” AND 350.org

“The World Wants a Real Deal” is a joint effort coordinated by the TckTckTck, 350.org, and Avaaz campaigns to call for a fair, ambitious and binding climate treaty in Copenhagen.

350.org coordinated an International Day of Climate Action in late October that CNN called “the most widespread day of political action in the planet’s history,” with 5,200 rallies in 181 countries. The campaign is calling on world leaders to create a climate agreement that lowers the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere below 350 parts per million, what scientists say is the safe upper limit.

I wish everyone the best of luck in getting the filthy rich guy that lives in the mansion on top of the hill, to quit pissing in the creek.

Hello,
We will probably walk up and down Rosecrans, getting as much exposure as possible, and possibly to the Old Town Trolley Station. It’s gonna be really awesome. If it rains hard (which is not predicted), we’ll reschedule for Monday night.

This is how we can show San Diego and the world that we care about all those suffering around the world from climate change. Bill McKibben, the founder of 350.org, recently said that for the Alliance of Small Island States which has proposed strong solutions to the countries who want to keep polluting, “no one pays attention to you because you lack armies. For this weekend, we’re your army.”

So tomorrow night, let’s be the army for those whose lives are being endangered by climate change. Let us be the change we wish to see.

I hope you can all come!

Thanks so much–

–Sam
