“Eber Street Man” has a new message

The tall wood sculptured “Eber Street Man” has a new message. During election and politiking days he had a message of “Hope,” and then during Halloween, it was “Boo”.  But the towering friendly face on Ebers seems to change with the seasons, and now its a message of “Thanks.”

Great Dane

Guinness World Record Holder Visits Dog Beach

Titan, the Great Dane who holds the Guinness World Record of the globe’s tallest dog, visited Dog Beach the other day. His official height, as measured by a veterinarian: 42.25 inches from floor to shoulder.

SignOnSanDiego reported:

Titan’s owner, Diana Taylor, said her white, 4-year-old dog marked the news by slobbering over an official Guinness certificate. “I saw it today, and I almost cried,” said Taylor, who had long sought the title for the animal she calls her “special needs” dog.

Titan is deaf, epileptic and partly blind, which makes the honor particularly sweet, Taylor said. “It’s not just wonderful for Titan,” she said. “It’s wonderful for all dogs.”  Go here for the remainder of the article.

Join Animal Rights Activists to Protest Michael Vick at OB’s Dog Beach – Sunday, Nov. 15th

The Eagles are coming to town to play the Charges on November 15. The Eagles have signed on Michael Vick, who plead guilty in 2007 to federal felony charges for his role in an extensive illegal dog fighting ring. Vick spent 23 months in prison. The former quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons was not picked up again by the team, nor were they able to trade him. He was released from his contract and recently signed on with the Eagles.

Dog fighting is inhumane and it is illegal. Professional athletes are role models for so many sports fans, including impressionable young people.  Please sign our petitions to let Michael Vick and the Eagles know that he is not a “role model” we want in professional football.

3 Day Breast Cancer Walk to Pass Through OB

Thousands will be taking part in the Breast Cancer 3 Day Walk coming up Nov 20th. They will be walking 15 to 22 miles each day, eating, relaxing, and camping overnight in 2-person tents.

The walk begins Nov. 20 at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. Walkers will pass through Del Mar and Torrey Pines, La Jolla, Mission Bay Park, Ocean Beach, Point Loma, Sunset Cliffs, Mission Beach, Pacific Beach, Old Town and Downtown San Diego. The walk ends in the East Village at Petco Park on Nov. 22.

(Actually, we the OB Rag, are looking for someone to write about the event, either as a participant or observer. If you’re interested or know someone who may be, leave a comment.)

OBcean a dissenting voice on Medical Marijuana Task Force

David Martin, an Ocean Beach businessman, is one of a trio of dissenting voices on the Medical Marijuana Task Force. Martin, along with Dave Potter, a community planner in Bay Park; and John Minto, a retired police officer from Santee, expressed concerns at the November 6th Task Force meeting about allowing medical marijuana cooperatives to set up in commercial neighborhood zones.

The Task Force met to consider zoning and permitting regulations for cooperatives. The task force will send its recommendations to the City Council for consideration in January. It voted unanimously voted to permit medical marijuana cooperatives to operate essentially in all commercial and industrial zones.

Newport News

OB Tour 11-14-09 009-sm-tam

OB Tamales has a new face lift.  Construction proceeded today and it looked like it wouldn’t be too long before the tamale stand will have a face of permanence on Newport Avenue.  It’s located right next to parking lot of the old Rock Paper Scissors building – which stands vacant now that the Halloween Costume people left.

Newport Ave’s pot dispensary that took seed in the old OB Hardware storefront is alive and busy.  OB Wellness, the store for medicinal marijuana at 4851 Newport, has more than simply medical herbs, it also has hemp products, soaps and clothing.  That section is open to non-medicinal pot patients. The pharmacy is in the back, and only herb patients with the proper identification can enter.

OB Tour 11-14-09 008-sm-pt

Off-Newport, way over on Voltaire, a new restaurant is testing the waters. To the Point, near the intersection with Catalina, has now been open for two month.  It took over where the Blueberry Hill hamburger place made its effort. Not an easy place.

Street Scene history? That’s a shocker, although I haven’t attended one for close to a decade. I suspect that it will be reinvented eventually. San Diegans love music and the climate is just too good not to throw a big music party outside. Whether it can work downtown anymore is questionable.

I remember the very first one- 5 bands, 5hours, 5 bucks. Two stages, one on the opposite end of one (or maybe two) blocks downtown. We danced in the streets to Los Lobos. Can’t remember the other 4. Had a fine time!

Of course you were there Dave! I was counting on you to fill in the blanks. I can remember one year while it was still a small event when Mojo Nixon and Skid Roper played. Such a good time.

not surprised. the lineup was great this year and last, but there really werent that many people there. could have been the layout, geography, cost whatever….ive heard more than a handful of people say the best street scene was actually when it was held at qualcomm…on grass. complete diversion from the concept of the whole thing, but without being able to go into bars or restaurants within the music festival anyway, whats the point in having it on concrete?

Unbelievable! Sarah Palin is on Oprah and every other talk show in the universe this week and WHY has NOBODY come up with a drinking game? Maybe all the wingnuts are correct about us becoming zombies since Obama got elected!

Quote from Sarah Palin’s new book: If any vegans came over for dinner, I could whip them up a salad, then explain my philosophy on being a carnivore: If God had not intended for us to eat animals, how come He made them out of meat?

I believe Jeffrey Dahmer had a similar quote about guys named Steve.

Isn’t SP really just a fancier cut of meat that’s been all dolled up to appeal to a certain disillusioned section of the public for their mere consumption?

Abby, I agree she is moronic, but she’s also more dangerous than that. I agree with another post somewhere on this blog about the rise of the fascist right – and she’s part of it. She, the Glenn Becks and others of that ilk really do want to present to the American people a political front that represents their extremist views in a party format.

She has a following. But why so much media coverage?

whoa! has anybody clicked on the electric chair salon ad yet? pretty wild stuff.

Reply

Abby November 18, 2009 at 11:18 am

Am I missing something? The electric chair site looks the same as it has for years.

On “Titan” I would recommend acupuncture for the problem of his “not being able to stand for long periods of time” issue. I had a Great Dane/Lab mix that developed similar issues and after every treatment she was like a new dog, she also lived happily for an extra 2 years which is awesome for a large dog.

Hodad’s benefit concert Dec 6th. The following was sent to us:
As you know there was a fire that burned down a home in Ocean Beach recently and the victims are dear to us at Hodads. So Hodads is sponsoring a Concert Benefit (OB Style) at the Masonic center in Ocean Beach on Sunday December 6 from 1-6 pm.

Several bands will play. There will be food and drink provided, however, we will be asking for donations that will be given to benefit Tristan and George Perry who lived in the house that burnt down.

The fire caused an estimated $150,000. More can be seen in the Beacon on the link below.

There are a number of people who exploit the medicinal marijuana law to operate as though marijuana were legal, which it isn’t. It’s just a defense to a criminal prosecution when a patient, with the recommendation of a doctor, is in possession or using, or transporting limited quantities of marijuana.”
