Winston’s? Sounds good!

Hey man! You want to know what OB’s coolest new best kept secret is? They just started this here in October so you may not be (as they say) hep to the jive, but it’s Happy Hour at Winston’s every Thursday evening from 5 til 8 pm. I don’t know about you, but I completely dig a no cover charge to hear some of Southern California’s best musical artists and acts perform at a great live venue while Kate the bartender serves up some great libations. Hey, maybe you’ve just always wanted to perform for your friends and others at a local night spot. A place that has national acts and yet still doesn’t break the bank while you knock back $2 “Nati Lites”, $3 “PBRs” and/or $2 house shots.

Cathryn BeeksWhat’s that you say, you’re just too busy working, trying to earn a buck and don’t really have the time to stop and enjoy yourself? Well then how about this for an interesting business opportunity? You just might discover the next big star right here in OB. It happened with Jewel and Jason Mraz and it could certainly happen again here on any given Thursday evening. I’m telling you, these aren’t your typical open mic nights either. Why? Because these are being hosted by San Diego music scene maker & shaker, musician/singer-songwriter/promoter, the incomparable Cathryn Beeks.

Some of the acts that I’ve seen her bring in there are quite amazing too, we were blown away last Thursday by some of the talent we witnessed, you really owe it to yourself to check it out too. I do have to say that I’m very impressed with her body of work as well. In 10 short years she’s made the San Diego music scene feel like a family. She’s always kind enough to give someone a shot and to help them out where ever she can. It’s like our local music community is a sort of golden garden that Cathryn tends to with much love and enthusiasm. This is why just about every single act and player in town knows and respects her.

winstons2I don’t want to sound like I’m gushing here, but she has to be the hardest working musician in town. A 5 time SDMA nominee who not only hosts the KPRI’s Homegrown hour every Saturday night at 9 pm, hosts Acoustic Alliance at Brick by Brick four times a year, runs the Listen Local SD website, books acts for Anthology, play concerts like the recent Kick Gas festival at “the Q” with her band the Ordeal (who btw also have a great new CD coming out Nov. 8th, called Mood Swing) but she is also now hosting Happy Hour at OB’s very own Winston’s every Thursday evening. Good God man, she must be twins! If you’d like more info on any of these events plus much more, please check out ListenLocalSD.com

If you think you have what it takes to perform live at Winston’s and would like to get on the bill for a Happy Hour slot, simply e-mail Cathryn and let her know what sort of musical act you have and what time you’d like to play. I’m sure that she’ll do everything she can to get you up on that big stage so you can show everybody just what you got.

We’ll see you there and don’t forget to tell a friend, OB Rawks! ;)

No doubt big Dave!

Another really cool thing there that’s been happening in concert is Richard Pollard video taping the performances. He’s been there the past 2 weeks and is definitely a music lover. Here’s one of many that he took of my own band a few weeks back. This song has Annie Rettic sitting in with us. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dDurwJnbYXo

You can contact Richard at musicloversd@yahoo.com
or check his You Tube account at http://www.youtube.com/user/MusicLover1948

Also, I didn’t have all of the info on Cathryn’s CD release when I wrote the piece so here’s the update; November 8th – Mood Swing CD Release party at Swedenborg Hall, 4pm. No cover, all ages, refreshments and 15 of her favorite songwriters will perform too. http://swedenborgianchurchsandiego.org/
