Leaflet Against War at Point Loma High School This Week
Students want an education not a one way ticket to a war zone. Help them learn the truth about war. Reaching students with an anti war message and offering alternatives is the best way to help them avoid going to war and reduce the war machine. OB Town Council and Dog Beach Dog Wash Doin’ It – Annual Clean-up on Halloween
The OB Town Council in conjunction with Dog Beach Dog Wash and the City’s ESD are doing the annual cleanup on 10-31-09. There is a need for volunteers. Last year over 18,000 pounds of couches, TV’s and other things dumped in the alleys of OB were collected, many unweighed recyclables. Here’s a link to the OBTC website.
We’re Number 37! Number 37, 37, 37! (C’mon – chant!)
According to the World Health Organization, the “overall health system performance” of the U.S. puts it in 37th place in the world. Here is a great music video on YouTube called “We’re Number 37”. It’s gone viral, approaching 300,000 hits. Watch it and forward the link to your friends.
Last Week’s 25th Annual Coastal Clean-Up Resulted in 65,000 Pounds of Trash
About 180 volunteers had signed up to be part of the OB sector in last week’s clean-up. Over-all, a record number of volunteers helped beautify and restore San Diego’s coastline, waterways, and open space areas Saturday (9/19) as part of the 25th annual California Coastal Cleanup Day. With 85 percent of cleanup sites reporting, a total of 9,587 volunteers participated in the cleanup effort at a record 80 cleanup sites throughout San Diego County and Tijuana.
The volunteers removed more than 65,000 pounds of debris from more than 120 miles of land and even underwater at two dive sites. Last year, more than 160,000 pounds of trash was picked up, according to I Love A Clean San Diego and San Diego Coastkeeper. (Go here for the remainder of the article from SDNN.) Question: why was this year’s clean-up short of about 100,000 pounds of trash from last year?
OB Librarian Promoted and Transferred
Matt Beatty has been promoted and will transfer to Malcolm X library as their branch manager. There is no replacement branch manager yet, as more particulars will be found out in the near future. We all will miss Matt, but he does need that promotion. The Friends of the OB Library plan some sort of send-off. At their last meeting Matt suggested we wait until we have the new person so that he/she can be invited.
To those of us involved in last Fall’s campaign to save the OB library, Matt was as helpful as he could be as a city employee. We all wish Matt the best, as he opens the next chapter of his life.
OB Hoopers Have Trial in November
Remember the fire performance hoopers cited last June here in OB? Four women hoopers were cited by police in early June while practicing their craft and skills at North OB. They were cited for a violation of city municipal law prohibiting setting things on fire, an infraction. Their trial has been set for November 19th.
They are contesting the charges, as many in the fire performers community view the case as a threat to their art and livelihood. There are stirrings within this community to form some sort of coalition that could hammer out agreements with the police and fire marshal, so that citations like this won’t occur in the future.

Two prominent East Bay marijuana advocates got clearance from the state today to try to put a pot-legalization initiative on the November 2010 California ballot.
Richard Lee, executive director of the medical marijuana dispensary known as Oaksterdam, and Jeff Jones, former director of the Oakland Cannabis Buyers’ Cooperative, are the sponsors of a measure that would allow anyone over 21 to possess or grow marijuana for personal use. It would allow each local government to decide whether to tax and regulate marijuana sales.

Progress finally comes to Ob?
Come to the UCSD campus in La Jolla on Thursday, 9/24 to support striking University of California research & technical workers [ http://www.upte.org/about/press/2009-09-21.pdf ] and take a stand for protecting the integrity of education at the University of California. The strike, at all UC campuses including UCSD, to protest the University’s unfair labor practices is scheduled for the first day of class to coincide with events by other groups also protesting University of California policies and practices that threaten the University’s educational mission. Over 1,100 UC faculty have signed the UC Faculty walkout statement [ http://ucfacultywalkout.com/ ]. The Unversity of California Students Association, representing 220,000 undergraduates, has unanimously endorsed the walkout and strike [http://www.ucsa.org/board/resolutions/UC%20Walk%20Out%20Resolution%20Final.pdf ].
Picket lines are planned from 7am – 4pm for the Gilman Entrance info booth and the Gilman parking structure at the intersection of Gilman Drive and Via La Jolla with a rally around noon at the Gilman parking structure.

Where did these strong, powerful words come from? I am quoting them straight out of The Declaration of Independence. Most of us are familiar with the first line in the second paragraph….”We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. ” … yet, have you read the entire document lately? It’s supposed to be our foundation of personal rights, the law, and is what our government is supposed to be bases upon. In my opinion, this country has drifted very far away from these original statements.
How about the Bill of Rights? Again, quoting from the original text:
“Article III
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
“Article VI
The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.
“Article XII
The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.”
And speaking of the Constitution….
“We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.”
Did I just see that right? “…insure domestic Tranquility….” That’s something I’m all for and can totally get behind.
I’m not going to idly stand by and allow unlawful and unconstitutional legal fictions to take away my or my families personal fundamental freedoms or our natural birthrights that are so clearly stated in these documents and explicitly protected in the highest courts in the land. I will always fight the good fight and will never reliquish my rights as a natural-person.
Sunshine – okay. What is behind this rant of yours in quoting from these important documents? You say you’re now willing to fight the good fight. Where were you during the eight long years under King George Bush when our rights were being dispatched continuously? Were you also willing to take on the good fight under him? Or now that we have an African-American president, you’re throwing down the gauntlet? I’m not getting your emphasis. Please explain.

With the passage of time (a nice way of saying getting older) comes new insight and information. While “King Bush”, as you referred to him, was in office I was unfortunately ignorant and simply unaware of what was going on in his political arena. Had I had known then, what I know now, I certainly would have proceeded in the same fashion as I am now. Having an African-American President now has nothing to do with my rant.
Coming into this new information recently has opened my eyes to what has happened to my natural rights as a human being. I’m just pissed that I was blind to it for so long. But now the veil has been removed and I’m just venting my frustrations as to what this country has done to our rights since the time of Abraham Lincoln.
Ah, the joys of learning, growing, and gathering insight…all in the public eye.

Ah, just wondering. We’ve all got to wake up some time. Better late than never. It’s just difficult for me to understand how someone could sleep for 8 years during the terrible wars that Bush began, the dismantling during his watch of the very Constitution and Bill of Rights that you now read from. I’m curious. What did you think was going on during your sleep?

I was not ‘sleeping’ during the Bush Adminstration; just under the veil of deception still. I am still researching and therefore have not yet formed my own conclusions to the information I was privy to discover yesterday. I have expanded my original search of “human being vs. artificial person” to include different philosophies, all political parties, history of politics, common law and human rights. Needless to say, I have a lot of research to do before forming my own opinion as to where I will eventually stand. Once I am certain of my findings I am willing to get back to you.
As for the Bush years, I was very busy those 8 years; choosing to focus on raising my son as a single mom – not on the the political world around me. “Choose our battles wisely,” they say. Some would say I had my head buried in the sand by choosing to ignore the political world around me. I called it survival and have no regrets.
Until I form another foundation on which to stand….I bid you adieu.

Where I was/ am coming from is that there’s all these right-wingers, birthers, Obama-haters on the scene now, and they’re all proclaiming Obama is taking away their rights, and ‘oh, my rights are being trampled on by the socialistic/ fascistic Obama’ although they did nothing during the 8 long years of Bush’s authoritarian reign. Ignorance does come in all shapes and sizes – which the righties have proven. So, when you started ranting about your rights – natch I assumed you may have saddled up with that crowd. Doesn’t sound like it. Thanks for the back and forth. Good luck on your research.
