OCEAN BEACH, CA. This news web/ blog is always responsive to our readers. There has been much complainin’ of late among you lefties about the lack of a progressive movement to get the country moving again, to fight for health care reform, to fight the right-wing crazies funded by the health care insurance companies, to generally acknowledge that on November 4, 2008, the country moved from a center-right nation to a left of center nation. We want to save our democracy by ending the empire.
In order to get it right, er, left, uh, … I mean … we need a T-shirt that says it all.
So – get inspired. Give us your ideas for a T-shirt that will get this country movin again. The winner – to be picked by a hand-picked back-room set of cigar-chompin’ OB Ragsters – will get an actual free OB Rag T-shirt! Wow! Now, where else could you benefit from positive and progressive thinkin’?
One of our avid readers, bodysurferbob, has started the contest already. Here are his suggestions:

Even though I’m an Independent and a Moderate I did vote for Obama in the last election because he was hands down the best man for the job. Thank God the Electoral College got it right too.
Since I can’t think of anything clever right now, I’ve got to go with the 1st one BSB came up with.
Reminds me a bit of a greeting card featuring a picture of then President Ronald Reagan picking his nose saying, “Don’t blame me I voted for McGovern” xD

Dave – are ya sure it was Reagan, and not Nixon? Reagan came much later (1980) than McGovern (1972).

And Dave, I had to look it up too. (zeitgest) – it’s one of those German words that sociologists love to bang around with.
Yep, it was after the 1984 election. I know it was Mondale and not McGovern who Ronnie beat, but McGovern was in those primaries and that’s how the card read.
There were some great ones about Tricky Dick though, like after he lowered the speed limit in the early ‘70’s, the bumper sticker that read, “Just Dick’n along at 55’ or his re-election one, “Don’t change Dicks in the middle of a screw, vote for Nixon in ‘72” xD

“As a socialist, I know Obama is not promoting socialist health care, but since the right thinks he is, why don’t we just go for it?!”

“Nixon, Reagan and Bush all wanted bigger government and the Right supported each of them. Now that Obama wants to provide health care to everyone, the Right is opposed to ‘big government’. ”
I know it doesn’t sound sexy and cutsy but it’s the idea that counts.

The first one makes me chuckle… and also makes me wonder. How does the OBRag contingent feel about Obama’s behavior regarding foreign relations thus far?
i can’t speak for the entire rag staff, brian, but my opinion is a solid “meh”.

I agree with Doug – it’s meh, but at least he’s not Bushed.
Not to sound like a broken liberal record, but echoing Frank, at least Bush, Inc. are not in control of foreign policy anymore. He did a lot of damage the past 8 years. We alienated ourselves from our allies and bolstered the extreme religious and cultural views on all sides. Our “Christian America” is now stuck at war with the Muslim world who has been at war with the Jewish world and it’s own muslim world for decades.
We’ve spent the last 8 years getting ourselves into one hot mess after another. I think it’s going to take nearly that long to heal all of the deep wounds that we’ve endured. I think Obama has already made some decent baby steps by addressing the middle east in a far different tone than the previous administration. No more, “you’re with us, or against us” absolutes. I like that. Do I think more could be done sooner to strengthen ties with other countries? Definitely. Mexico and the rest of Central and South America have been neglected and had their leaders undermined by the rest of the developed world for as long as I can remember. So I would like to see more done to improve our relationship with those countries. Oh…that’s right. They’re poor and have nothing to offer us, so screw them…right?
If I were giving out grades to the different administrations:
Bush, Inc.: F-
Obama, LLP: C-
He will improve his grades dramatically once our troops are safe at home. He will get an A++ if he can make the Mexico border resemble the Canadian border and extra credit for listing the minutemen as a racist/ domestic terrorist organization.
Sadly, Jon, I think C- might be an optimistic grade. Afghanistan seems to be projecting into the endless quagmire scenario, with little real appreciation for the details of reality on the ground: history, culture, livelihood . . . sounds too much like Vietnam, more than Iraq ever did . . . [only Gen. McCrystal seems to appreciate how bad things are there] . . . and in South America Obama has managed to distance himself even more from the progressive/left majority of governments elected in the last decade mainly by not being firm against the military coup in Honduras, but also by continuing to strengthen the political/military relationship with Colombia and its president Uribe, by far the most reactionary South American government, and a major foreign front in the silly if not murderous War Against Drugs . . .billions of dollars in military aid . . . google “Plan Colombia” for much detail.
On the middle east, perhaps “tone” is important, Jon, but I believe that Israel must be held to universally accepted international standards around refugees, occupation/settlements, nukes, and human rights for its in-country minorities, until then not much will change . . . and the Prez barely even addresses these issues in his policies
I have to say I did not expect much different so I am not disappointed as much as it makes me want a t-shirt that says:”I voted for Obama to end the wars, get good health care reform, but all i got was this lousy t-shirt” though I love the “I voted for the Black guy and I’m not sorry!” one as well . . . seems like a great way to introduce the race “5000-pound-elephant-in-the-room” issue without having to insult somebody . . .
Don’t mean to be so negative, Jon, and I love your suggestions in the last paragraph. Another one, and real easy, would be to end the embargo and travel ban against Cuba . . . get our tourists, agriculture goods, adn technology going there and bring in some of that great rum and cigars . . . now that would be progress!!
Oh, and I’ll order at least one of these t-shirts no matter which slogan wins
