I was on the OB Planning Board when this project was first proposed. We denied it as out-of-scale with the surrounding neighborhood. The builder wanted a one-room third story. And wanted it bad. He appealed our decision to the San Diego Planning Commission. 3 guesses on who won.
There is some actual OB history to the house on Muir that this building and the front building replaced. It was the house that the Secret Army Organization terrorist group shot into in early 1972, wounding Paula Tharp. Bullet holes in the wood remained there until it was torn down. An FBI informant drove the car that the shooter was in. The story is within the blog – go find it by searching for SAO.

I video taped David Helvarg telling the story in front of the house when you guys had a history walk during a reunion of activist in 2000.
I’m pretty sure I zoomed to the bullet holes and got a good shot of the house.
Later I asked the new owner if I could have the shingle with the bullet hole in it. I left my Information with him ,but never heard back.
My hope was to have a display for a museum if we ever get one.
I lived across the back fence on Long Branch St. in the late 1970s.
We (my brother Mike and I) lived in a cool little cottage on a big lot. Later in the mid 1980s the cottage was torn down and replaced by a huge condo project.
Talk about gentrification. During construction after all the framing was completed somebody torched it. It was a huge fire and scorched the houses on both sides. They cleared the lot and continued building until completion.
