The serenity of the Masonic Temple was banished for a few short hours last night as six Ocean Beach performing groups took to the stage to celebrate the release of a compilation CD that features local artists performing songs about the community.

The CD, entitled Waves, included fourteen tracks from Obcean musicians and photography from local photographer Jim Grant. It was compiled by producer Chuck Schiele in support of the Ocean Beach Mainstreet Association’s 30th Annual Street Fair.

Roughly a couple hundred people showed Friday for the event, which included food & beverage concessions from local favorite Hodad’s and Pizza Port. The show was streamed live over the internet via The Scheff Experience on Ustream.tv; video and artist interviews from the party can be found here. Reportedly there were about 25,000 viewers for the program.

Performers included: Steve Phillips and the Pescadero Pickers, Blackbirdz, Bad Science Fiction, John Miller and the Payback, Chi Club, Chuck Edwards, Coco and Lafe, Danyavaad and the Shimmy Sisters. Each act was allotted about twenty minutes; the rules of the hall dictated that the show be concluded by 11 pm.

This was a really fun time! Thanks to OBMA and the Masonic Center for putting it on. Even though partying in that masonic center sorta makes you feel like you’re at your senior prom, it was a lot of fun, and you could feel a really good energy through the whole night. Great job! And great beer from Pizza Port! Can’t wait to have them here in OB, and REALLY can’t wait for them to CLEAN THEIR BUILDING!!!!! :)

An event to cherish to be sure. Can hardly wait until next years WAVE 2…hope you do additional advertising next year to draw in more locals. Seems to me like everyone in town would have benefited from attending this event. It allowed me to feel good about being an OBcean once again (after the recent fiasco/mess left behind by the MM fight).

The music was performed at a level where casual conversation could still be carried on….thank you for that from one who can no longer appreciate music at mind jaring and ear drum blowing decibels as I once did in decades past.

I have to agree with Jon that having it at the Masonic Temple was a bit ‘prom like,’ yet considering all that occured during the event, the location could easily be overlooked (this year). What other choices do you have in mind for next year’s location? I say more couches and overstuffed chairs vs. rows of chairs would be good and so much more comfortable to enjoy an incredible night of good music by.

All the local musicians who performed were truly masters of their craft! I loved you all and thank you for your creative energies. Well done all!

The ones that stood out for me were: Blackbirdz “Livin in OB.” It continues to play on in my mind and I have since turned my neighbors on to this fantastic melody. Thank goodness it was on the CD (which, by the way, was only 10 smackerroos). The final performers of the evening, Danyavaad etc. were absolutely visually intoxicating.

The food and beverages offered were a great idea, too. Whoever decided to give the ‘chocolate’ lady her own table gets a glittery gold star from me. The individually wrapped chocolate candies and assorted, scrumptious cookies were the perfect desert an hour or so after a more than satisfying Hodad’s gut bomb cooked to order with absolutely no line to wait in.

What a wonderful evening it was. Thank you to everyone who helped pull it together. The collective community effort was well worth the bicycle ride to the Masonic Temple.

Could we do it again in 6 months? I, for one, don’t want to have to wait 6 months to hear some more fantastic local OBcean music!!!

oops, the chocolates and cookies were a perfect ‘dessert’ not a desert as I mistyped. Oh so begging your pardon.

Oh, I wasn’t trying to diss the location. I thought it was perfect! And thanks to the Masonic center for putting it on. Just my weird sense of humor to say the place felt like a senior prom. I thought it was perfect, unpretentious, inviting and so OB! I would like to do it there again, with an under the sea theme! Maybe pac shores can get involved! And I’m with Sunshine. We should do it again soon!

It was such a great event, and the vibe was truly O.B. Thanks to Sunshine for the nice compliment on our song ” Livin in O.B.” It was written with much love and pride. D.J.

Great party at the Waves CD Release, and awesome music too! The Shimmy Sisters really stole the show with their exotic belly dancing.

I’ve posted up a bunch of photos, check them out

I was bummed to miss this show as I hate being sick. I’m sure it was a great time. The Masonic Temple has a great vibe, I remember playing a wedding reception there in the early ’90’s so I know that school auditorium feel it has.

In case you missed my review of the Waves album, here’s the link; http://obrag.org/?p=8981

I heard that Chuck Schiele’s Bad Science Fiction was recently nominated for best new band. I’m looking forward to hearing a lot more O.B. musicians and songs in the future too! ;)
