Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed into law Sen. Christine Kehoe’s bill giving the city of San Diego full authority over the La Jolla Children’s Pool.

The move comes just hours after a local judge ordered the City Council to begin the dispersal of the seals within 72 hours.

“I’m grateful for the Governor’s quick signing of this legislation and hopefully it will bring some calm to an overheated discussion,” Kehoe said. “Our community has struggled through this debate for more than 16 years and now the future use of the Children’s Pool rests with the San Diego City Council — as it rightfully should.”

The decision puts the fate of the seals in the hands of the San Diego City Council, which is expected to declare the area a seal sanctuary. It overrides a 1931 trust that specified the area solely for use as a children’s swimming area.

ClubStyleDJ – according to Voice of San Diego today:

“The issue will now go before the City Council, which is expected to declare the pool a seal sanctuary.

The City Attorney’s Office has planned a press conference for tomorrow morning, where the office will explain what it believes the governor’s signature means.”

I thought it was a little harsh to say “here’s 72 hours, get rid of the seals immediately”. First off, have you ever seen the size of those things? It would take 72 hours just to get close enough without getting your arm taken off.

Anyway, here’s to a new seal sanctuary in La Jolla! These poor seals have been at the center of a pointless debate and they don’t even know it…hopefully they won’t be affected at all.

There is a support-the-seals demonstration today (Tuesday) at 5pm at the seal’s beach, and another one at 8:30 am on Thursday, the day the City is supposed to begin the dispersal.

URGENT! CHANGE OF VENUE FOR SEAL DEMONSTRATION ON THURS.

Plans regarding the seals have changed! Since the lawyers are going in front of the judge on Thursday, July 23, at 8:30 a.m., the gathering will be held at Superior Court, Hall of Justice, 330 W. Broadway — NOT AT SEAL BEACH IN LA JOLLA.

If you want to go into court and hear the ruling, it will be in Department 60 in front of Judge Yuri Hofmann at 8:30 a.m.
