in Ocean Beach

Photos & Story By Haley and Doug Porter

Well over a thousand young people and their families came to OB to just “fly a kite” on Saturday, March 7th , at the OB Elementary School and Recreation Center for the 61st Annual Ocean Beach Kiwanis Kite Festival and Parade.

It was open to all ages. Kids and adults got to make their own kites—some flew and some didn’t. But everybody had fun. The competition was split up into ten categories, by age and school grade. The winners got certificates and ice cream coupons from Lighthouse Ice Cream and Yogurt. Prizes were awarded for “most colorful”, “best theme” and “most creative”.

There were also a crafts fair, carnival and llama rides. Young musicians from the School of Rock played, along with a band called Beer Feat. It was loud. Small space + big amps equals headache. We skipped the free hot dogs and went over to Azucar, a Cuban style patisserie. We had a pastry called a Divina and it lived up to its name; it truly was divine.

Everyone marched from OB elementary down Santa Monica Street to the beach. There were lots of people along the way cheering us on. When we got to the beach, everybody started flying their kites. There were lots of dogs, some gymnasts and everybody was having fun.

Haley is almost 13 and attends the San Diego School for the Creative and Performing Arts.

Great post, Haley! And especially very nice photos – you must have taken them because they are in focus – unlike your dad’s.

I agree Haley. You’re a good writer. And the pictures are better than Doug’s.

Welcome Haley. Your article is very concise, with just the right amount of editorializing. And it reads better than your father’s posts … ha ha just kidding. But the photos are better than his.

I’m so proud too! Very concise and clear writing. I like: Small space + big amps equals headache.

I didn’t even know that you knew about the hilarious, “More Cowbell”sketch.

One of my favorites!
Are you sure, that you are only 12 going on 13? Brava, mia divina.

One more thing! Does this now mean, you have joined the Upitty Women’s brigade? You most definitely fit the mold.

Silly Grandpa March 9, 2009 at 11:06 am

Hey, Granddaughter! Good job…with capital letters, too. Dad’s heart must be broken.

love the local reporting from a young person who can offer the best perspective on an event such as the kite festival. Awesome!

Way to go Haley! And Auntie Sheila, Haley can be the leader of our brigade of Uppity Little Women!

Always something good and interesting in OB. I see some regulars, guess I will come back and join the fun. I have a lot of stuff up on iReports now.

Welcome back Dave S. We have been having some fun – not only at the kites but also on Blondstone and Rock Paper Scissors.
