Committee’s Recommendation Goes to Full House
WASHINGTON – Wednesday, July 30 – the House Judiciary Committee, voting along party lines, cited former top White House aide Karl Rove for contempt of Congress. The Committee cited Rove for defying a subpoena to answer questions about the dismissals of a number of federal prosecutors – including Carol Lam in San Diego – and for the general politicization of the Justice Department.
By failing to appear at a July 10 hearing on allegations that the White House used its influence over the Justice Department, the House Judiciary Committee said that Rove had broken the law. The allegations also include claims that Rove encouraged partisan prosecutions against Democrats such as former Alabama Gov. Don Siegelman.
With the committee decision only a recommendation, the citation then goes to the Full House. Some doubt whether Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., would allow a final vote.
