Paula Tharp

January 6, 1972 — 36 years ago, a right-wing terrorist organization, the Secret Army Organization – an offshoot of the Minutemen – sent a hit man through the streets of Ocean Beach. The car pulled up to a residence on the 5000 block of Muir Street, home to a number of anti-Viet Nam War activists and OB Rag staffers, including embattled San Diego State professor, Pete Bohmer. The gunman fired two shots into the residence; one bullet hit Paula Tharp in the elbow; the other narrowly missed Shari Whitehead Lawson. The driver of the vehicle was a FBI informant.

For more on this incident and the Secret Army Organization see Vol. 2, No. 5, January 1972, pages 1 and 4 of the OB Rag, and “the Rag Once Again.” Read more about Paula and her involvement with the Rag in the early ’70’s in “New Blood.
