Old Rags Scanned
We have unearthed and dusted off a box that contains a treasure trove of history….. Dozens of the old OB Rags that were printed in the ’70’s. That’s right, before digital. We’ve had a great time looking through them and looking back, and want to bring them to you also. We have scanned a great number of the covers of old Rags and we are making those issues available for donations. See here for those that are now available.

As time allows, we will be scanning and posting more images of the Old Rags here on this site. Each page will be scanned in a large enough format that you may read them on your monitor. Depending on the browser you use, click on the images to expand or reduce their size on your screen.They will be accessible from this page (click on the “Old Rags” link in the navigation bar above) or under “Pages” on the sidebar. They will be titled according to their publication date.

How wonderful to be able to see copies of the old “O.B. Rag.” I remembering reading them faithfully and even working on a couple of issues back in the 70’s.

i was hoping you had information on an incident that happened around 1999. a few builders wanted to build a gasoline station on voltaire st, ocean beach community protested and the lot was turned into a samll garden for alittle while. also the garden was named after the women who opened the strudel bakery, mika, who died around that time. if you have any available past articles on either the garden, or the first strudel bakery owner, i would really like to see them, please.

Thanks for writing in. You are correct, there was a move to build a gas station on the corner lot at Voltaire and Sunset Cliffs Blvd in OB. The owner, World Oil, tried to put one in there three times but each time it was blocked by the community and the City of San Diego. The community didn’t want another gas station and the city said there was not sufficient space on the lot for proper enter and exit by the large gas & oil trucks.
So, the lot sat there for a long time, ugly, old asphalt, trash, … and no one cleaned it up. The Ocean Beach Grassroots Organization (OBGO) took on the responsibility of cleaning the lot up, planting a garden, and maintaining the lot. OBGO did this for a year or two, even working with the city on code enforcement and clean-up efforts. It was called “Voltaire Park”; there was a memorial to Mika the woman who owned the strudel bakery and who died suddenly.
But then, on May 15, 2003, without notice or warning to the residents or OBGO, World Oil sent in bulldozers, a crew – all protected by a platoon of police officers – and set about destroying the garden and the park and the memorial. Now, we understand that World Oil is at it again. They have bought, we have heard, the lot next door, the old Dover Plumbing lot, and now they have enough land for a small retail or office building. The OB Planning Board has heard from World Oil recently. Any inquiries about present plans of World Oil for the land should be addressed to the Planning Board.

If I recall, it was an Italian restaurant for a while too. I’d order a take out sandwich there and run across the street to Chris’ for beer.

Don’t sell all your old Rags and they are way to cheap for so little remaining stock. Keep them for archival purposes!
Gary – we kept of course as complete a whole set as we could find. In the meantime, the current OB Rag has expenses, and we need to create some financial resources for the living media.
Put a paypal donation button on the OBRag Site and get the readership to pay up for their right of expression. This is something I can give a contribution to at least once a year.

I didn’t think I would ever see these again !! I have such great memories of going up to UCSD with my teachers and printing out the O.B. PEOPLES RAG,also distributing it on the streets of OB,I am a OB community free school graduate of 1972 ,I think there are only 2 of us, my brother Don and myself !! thanks for the oppertunity to replace some of the old copies I saved for so long, but sadly lost about 15 yrs ago,I enjoyed seeing the pictures of the original peoples food store I helped open, it was my first REAL job .I’m looking forward to receiving my original copies, and sharing them with my 10 Grandkids ,, thanks, MIMI (marilyn Long )
I seem to remember”free frank gormlie” spray painted around OB in the early 70’s. what’s story. I’d heard he was the guy that torched the illegal 3 story above pier?
Allow me to squelch that rumor right now, my friend. How do I know? I’m that guy. There were spray-paintings around but they all stemmed from my imprisonment for the Collier Park Riot of March 1971.
then who went down for the del mar/train tracks riot ? I was also at that one !! all this time i thought that was you ,, they got for that,
There was an entire case, first called the “Del Mar 5” , then 4, and … there were several convictions, I know.
Wow, thanks for the memories. I was a hippie and worked at “The Black” for years. I helped distribute “The OB Rag”. Those were the best of times for sure!!
Wow how cool !! Except the same battles are still going on today.I realy enjoyed the port has no authority. I’m one of those boat people and because we don’t fit into the perfect mold we get treated like it. The misunderstood is scary to so many. I for one don’t ever want to be connected to the machine. And I love my moat
