The Project Review Committee of the OB Planning Board meets this Wednesday, April 15th. The Review committee is a sub-committee of the full Board and does an initial review of all projects before they go before the Board. The committee meets at 6pm at the OB Rec Center, 4726 Santa Monica Avenue.
It’s one main agenda item is to review an application for Coastal Development Permit for a demolition and construction project on the 4900 block of Del Mar Avenue. The project at 4939 – 4941 Del Mar Avenue would demolish 3 existing structures and replace them with a 3-unit residential condominium with subterranean garage. The site is a 6,800 square foot lot, very near the intersection with Ocean Front Street, less than a block from the beautiful Sunset Cliffs.

This project had originally been slated to be reviewed by this sub-committee of the full Board back on November 19th but the applicant withdrew the project at the last minute. Now it has returned and will be reviewed this week.

The Project Review Committee is now chaired by Blake Herrschaft, a brand new member to the Planning Board, selected by his peers as the new Vice-Chair for the full Board. (The Vice-Chair is the chair of the Project Review Committee.) It had previously been chaired by John Ambert, the newly-selected Chair. Both Ambert and former Chair Pete Ruscitti have promised to give Herrschaft their full support and assistance during his early days as part of the leadership.

Here we go again….faced with another decision about tear down or not in the ocean block of OB.
Hard to tell or know if this proposed tear down is of historical significance. If it is, a close scrutiny is warranted. If not, at least whoever is hoping to develop the property will use a little imagination and not put up a square/rectangular block maxing out to the property line.
