San Diegans will join thousands of others around the country and hold a march and rally against MONSANTO – this Saturday, May 25th in Balboa Park.

San Diego Action for May 25th is participating in the international ‘March Against Monsanto’ taking place in over 45 countries and 400 cities.
March Against Monsanto SD announced last week that on May 25 in Balboa Park at least 2,000 people will participate in a peaceful rally and march as part of the global “March Against Monsanto.” This event, which specifically targets industry giant Monsanto, will raise awareness about transgenic engineering, as well as the environmental, political and social injustices resulting from toxic agribusiness.
The rally will begin at 11a.m. at Balboa Park in San Diego and at 11:30 will feature speakers; including, but not limited to: Hugh Moore from the Green Party who is expected to say a few words about the lack of GMO labeling in our country and the revolving door for lobbyists and government workers and the influence money plays; Eleanora I. Robbins, PhD, Dept. Geological Sciences, San Diego State University, and maybe even a few special surprises.
We will also be entertained by a special performance of the Occupella who will sing Old Man Santo. Following the rally, we will march and then conclude at the World Beat Center for a People’s Assembly and workshop.
Among the people expected to present at the WBC are: Eva Roufe, who will discuss topics such as sustainability and food independence; Tim Eden, from Eden AquaPonics discussing Aquaponics, aquaculture, hydroponics; Farmer Bill from City Farmers Nursery.
After the march to Balboa Park, it will continue to the Little Italy Farmers Market… and then Amici Park at 1:00 PM (2 blocks from the market / W Date & State St). Here at the park we will be having a commUNITY potluck with ingredients from the market and an education/inspiration exchange.
California Proposition 37 was narrowly lost. U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA) and Congressman Peter DeFazio (D-OR) on April 24, 2013 introduced the Genetically Engineered Food Right-to-Know Act, bipartisan legislation that would require the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to clearly label genetically engineered (GE) foods so that consumers can make informed choices about what they eat.
According to the Huffington Post in a May 18, 2013 article, Senator Jeff Merkley (D-Oregon) plans to introduce an amendment in Washington that would repeal Section 735 from the Consolidated and Further Continuing Appropriations Act of 2013, the bill that was secretly passed which lets biotech companies that experiment with genetically-engineered and genetically-modified crops test and sell lab-made products even if legal action is taken against them.
Sixty-four countries around the world already require the labeling of GE foods, including all the member nations of the European Union, Russia, Japan, China, Australia and New Zealand.

Last minute additions. Jeffrey Smith, publisher of Seeds of Deception and producer of Genetic Roulette will appear via Skype at the WBC.
Banning GMOs will create a lot of weed picking jobs.
In Humboldt Co. at Eureka, we had almost 400 turn out Saturday.
