OB Womans Club

By Becky Sorenson

In an effort to continue serving the Ocean Beach community, the OB Woman’s Club is hosting a community clothing swap fundraiser. This event will be held on Saturday Feb. 23rd from 1-3pm. There will be a $5 entrance fee for this event.

A Clothing Swap is an event designed to reuse the perfectly good clothing, shoes and accessories that we no longer wear or need. Here’s how it works, clean out your closet and bring some gently used wearable clean clothes that are taking up unwanted space in your closet. Then come browse and find some new items to spruce up your wardrobe.

OB Womans Club LogoFor those who may not be familiar with the Ocean Beach Woman’s Club, let me give you a little background.

The club has been a hub of activity in Ocean Beach for over eighty eight years. It is located at 2160 Bacon St. They were founded in 1924 and are one of the oldest civic groups in San Diego.

The purpose of the club is to work for the community in the civic, educational and social development of Ocean Beach. Any woman interested in the purpose of this club is eligible for membership. The club holds monthly meetings the first Monday of every month at 5:30pm and board meetings the second Monday of every month also at 5:30pm. A garden club was created a few years ago on the grounds of the club. There are individual garden plots as well as a community garden.

Over the years the OB Woman’s Club has raised needed funds and donations to Loaves and Fishes Emergency Food Bank, Sleep Train and Polenski Center for foster kids, OB Christmas Food and Toy drive, OB Fireworks Festival, and the Halloween Carnival at the recreation center. The club also sponsors a Mother’s Day Essay contest for the 4th graders at OB elementary school each May. The club rents out the facility to the community of Ocean Beach to raise funds. The club has been rented for weddings, birthday parties, meetings and church services.
