San Diego Joins National Protest Against Keystone XL
A number of prominent environmental organizations and groups have come together to organize a San Diego protest against the Keystone Pipeline and to fight against climate change – joining groups nation-wide for a day of action next Sunday, the 17th.
Groups such as SanDiego350.org, Citizens Climate Lobby, Sierra Club San Diego, Environmental Health Coalition, Women Occupy San Diego, and many other organizations are planning a rally on Sunday, Feb. 17th, at the Mission Bay Park Visitors’ Center, in east Mission Bay, near the I-5 freeway. Protesters are being asked to wear all-black.
Protests are also happening in Los Angeles , San Francisco and other cities across the country.
The pipeline is designed to carry dirty tar sands oil from Canada to the U.S.
San Diego speakers include:
- San Diego Mayor Bob Filner,
- Scripps Oceanography Professor Jeffrey Severinghaus,
- Sierra Club San Diego Chair and Former Assemblywoman Lori Saldana,
- Palomar UU Minister Rev. Dr. Beth Johnson and
- green business owner and veteran Elizabeth Perez-Halperin.
Music by Charlie Imes, a Singing Telegram to President Obama by the Occupella Chorus, and lots of signs and banners are being plalnned.
Organizers say:
It’s time to put boots on the ground. Let’s see if we can make this the biggest environmental rally ever in San Diego and demand local as well as national action on climate change. We urge you, your group members, family, and friends to be there and let your voice be heard. Let’s WAKE UP San Diego to the strength and commitment of our environmental community! We look forward to seeing you February 17th.

Later, I realized that the headline is a tad misleading; there is no Keystone pipeline going in at Mission Bay; the protest is at Mission Bay. I thought this was self-evident, but ya never know.
people that enjoy the currently outrageous gas prices will go to this……..enjoy the day….north america needs to be independent of the middle east for oil, people!
I was trying to enjoy the park with my kids today and had to circle the parking lot forever in my “hybrid vehicle” waiting for all these so called fossil fuel opponents to move thier suvs and gas guzzling vehicles so i could park…….practice what you preach maybe they would get more support if they would have walked ,taken the bus, biked or car pooled to the rally! I watched single driver after single driver get out of there beast with a pickett sign .Typical so-cal crowd…… bored and looking for a cause to cling on to.
I am sorry to hear that Mike had problems parking while an estimated 500 activists converged on Mission Bay to make a strong statement against fossil fuels pollution, climate change and the need to go green and solar. I can say that the camaraderie was wonderful and except for the 2 men in a big, gas-guzzling truck flipping us off and Mike from the Sierra Club getting injured, it was a glorious afternoon of meaningful action!
