Right around 9:15 Friday night – Jan 18th -in Ocean Beach a woman stabbed a man in his forearm with a pocketknife – or folding knife – while they were arguing.  The 44 year old woman was taken into custody by police.

The stabbing is reported to have occurred in the 5000 block of Newport Avenue, the main business street in town, but it could also have occurred on the nearby beach, as police and the media use that block as the address for anything that happens right on the beach. Initially the woman ran away, so says Police Officer David Stafford, and a witness followed her. But she turned and threatened to kill the witness.

Police arrived and arrested the unidentified woman on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and criminal threats.  In the Channel 10 news video, the woman appeared to have lacerations on her forehead and cheek. The guy was taken to a local hospital for treatment of his non-life-threatening wound.

Lower Newport and the beach at night both continue to be sources or a zone of violence in OB. Locals point to the homeless and to the numerous bars in the area for reasons there are so many assaults. However, neither may actually be the primary reasons for so many assaults. For instance, violent assaults went up during October’s Oktoberfest in OB.

In other news, man bites dog?

In a way that’s it’s own rebuttal, isn’t it? Unless we’re forgetting that bars means alcohol and oktoberfest means pumpkins- err, alcohol.

Booze makes some people argue and fight, pretty sure we all knew that. It’s not a big deal as long as the victims are also the drinkers and fighters. When it spills out and starts to affect kids and regular folks during regular hours well that’s something to get worked up over. I guess 9:15 friday night is regular hours, but say midnight, 5000 block of Newport?

Them’s fightin’ words!

(understanding my unconcerned attitude is not shared by all, I just know you can’t change the way drunks are)
