A 53-year-old motorcyclist was left wedged in the back window of a car Tuesday after a crash in Loma Portal. The accident at Rosecrans and Lytton streets was reported at 6:44 a.m., San Diego police said.
The motorcyclist was heading south on Rosecrans in heavy traffic when he ran into the back of a 2001 Saturn sedan, police said. The man suffered a broken hip and broken ribs, police said.
Officers were conducting traffic control in the area and had the southbound lanes of Rosecrans between North Evergreen Street and Lytton shut down during the investigation.
UPDATE: Police say a bad accident involving a vehicle and a motorcycle occurred somewhere along Rosecrans or its immediate vicinity.
The south-bound lanes of Rosecrans Boulevard in Point Loma have been blocked off by police for the past hour and half – and this is during rush hour.
The result is a nightmare of gridlock – particularly for workers, sailors and scientists who are normally heading south on Rosecrans during this time of day, heading for the nuclear sub-base or the Scripps facility. Or just trying to get home.
This situation was just reported to us by a contributor at 8:40 a.m., who counted 8 marked police cars in the area, but no indications of any accident, and he saw no ambulances, nor firetrucks, nor . Just some kind of police “action” accident.
We placed a call to the Western Division and were told that there was a “bad accident involving a vehicle and motorcycle” somewhere along Rosecrans. Emy, an operator at the front desk said she had no information on whether there were any injuries or not, and did not know the exact location of the accident.

At what time, did the accident happen? And why does it matter? Blocking major roads has consequences; congestion and frustration risks additional accidents and injuries. The police are not always efficient or effective; sometimes they get sloppy. I ask because at 7:15 am blacks and whites were extensively deployed; a blue motorcycle was parked at the curb; a silver sedan was stopped in the right lane. No tow trucks, fire trucks or medical vehicles were seen. An accident? They could have been and gone already – again, time. Why? Because at 8:35 am the scene was unchanged. Eight patrol cars were still deployed to block off the south bound section of Rosecrans from Evergreen south to Lytton/Barnett. Four officers are standing on Rosecrans near a patrol car chatting. Rush hour traffic is being redirected into the residential neighborhoods on each side of Roscrans at Evergreen. The south bound Rosecrans exit of Interstate 8 is backed up beyond the horizon. An officer is using a wheel to measure distances in the right side of the right lane of Rosecrans near Lytton. No Ambulances, fire trucks or tow trucks. It seems the accident likely happened before 7 am; that emergency vehicles had come and gone by 7:15, and yet with all the resources – thousands in labor – after nearly two hours the officers on duty had yet to take the physical report and open up one lane? I hope there is more information yet to come.
