The U-T San Diego is reporting that a young man and his woman friend were attacked by a group of men Friday night under the OB Pier around 8 pm.

The man, reportedly 18 years old, was stabbed twice, in the chest and in an arm. His injuries are not considered life-threatening.  The guy who stabbed him – one of five men – was described as white, 20-something, and wearing black shirt and shorts.

The woman was slugged in her face during the attack and had her backpack stolen.

Police said that the two victims had been sitting under the pier at the foot of Newport Avenue just before the attack.

Wasn’t this during Octoberfest?People are hitting a woman and noone helped? How is it these guys got away and noone saw anything?

Better get after that Stebbins guy. He is the real problem in OB.

It would be interesting to know the rest of the story… Did he know his attackers? Was this personal? If totally random this shit will ruin a community.

I was there, saw the couple and what they were doing before the stabbing. I also know the name of the guy who did the stabbing but the police are not interested.

What? Not interested? What were they doing before the stabbing? Drugs? Sex? Do tell… What was the motive if you knew the criminals?

That attack sounds bad, and I hope the victim recovers and the perps are caught, but is nothing compared to the full on gang battle, stabbing, and multiple assaults I witnessed first-hand last night, that started with a stabbing in a bar on Newport. Spilled down east from behind Hodads etc onto Bacon and all over the place. Not a police person to be found for a good, probably, 8, 10, 15 minutes since the time it must have started.

One of the bouncers from cheswicks was stabbed while breaking up a fight last night. I don’t know a lot, but it sounds like he will be ok, and they did catch the guy. Sucks that such a fun event has to be marred by the actions of a couple scumbags.

Another stabbing on Newport last night. Bar security stabbed in abdomen. An arrest was actually made this time. 2 octoberfest nites,2 stabbings. Things like this are going to start to keep people from coming to these events. This is what OB is becoming.Stabbings, sexual assaults, peeping toms, murders and tweaks. The fight against gentrification collides with what happens in run down parts of town…soon noone will want to live here, rich or poor….

OB is rough around the edges and always has been. That’s part of the charm and what both people who live there and others who hang out there love about it. “Run down” is a stretch, but yeah things have gotten really bad recently so changes going to be needed.

Ken, you have any more axes to grind?

Here’s mine: I don’t have any easy answers for how to help local businesses in OB. It is Hans Brinker plugging holes in the dyke, for sure. But in the 5 years I have been here, the amount of “bar capacity”, for lack of a better term, has almost doubled. There is a big push here to grow a restaurant an entertainment district, from a lot of people I like and respect.

That may in fact help to keep the mom and pop culture here going, and hey, who hates more good restaurants to eat at? But having grown up around much larger districts of that nature, I fully believe that the trade-off that gets made in pursuing this path is more drunken crime and violence. Pretty soon, people might not even be able to blame the street kids on the seawall for everything around here.

This is not to conflate some of the recent crimes with any of that (a sexual predator is a sexual predator, a peeping tom is a peeping tom), but as far as an increase in people taking leaks on every building and stabbings happening outside bars after midnight, what exactly did people think was gonna happen?

Just my two cents.

Actually, you hit on the other axe to grind. (See my comment in the thread about the sex crime meeting). The amount of establishments serving alcohol is increasing and crime is going to increase with that. How many places that serve do we need? How many more incidents do we want? Perhaps some better community planning is needed. The big push to grow a reestaurant and entertainment district will line the pockets of a few folks.good for them.other than more restaurant selection I dont see the benefit to those that live here.

I havent cked the actual statistics, but wouldn’t alcohol consumption increase the likelyhood of all violent crime, including sexual assaults?

Agreed. We really have no need for any more new bars to pop up. Many hold the motto keep PB out of OB, but that’s exactly what were doing when we invite all these bars to pop up. I’ve noticed a direct corellation between Mothers on Bacon opening and more idiots creating problems outside my house.

Well, with any luck, they will move the now-lame Octoberfest gig back to Dusty Rhodes where it was actually a good time. Seemed more family-oriented over there, instead of the thug-fest which it has apparently become.

Perhaps, but OB maybe needs to clean up a bit too. The past couple of years things have really spiraled out of control as far as crime goes. The police needs to do a better job but that can’t be counted on.

It got better for a few months after the Respect OB campaign, but then got far worse again since July. The general apathy I see by most of my neighbors doesn’t help.

Bottom line: For the most part it seems like anything negative that happens isn’t done by an actual OBcean. The police need to do a clearing out of the tumbleweeds. We all know the usual characters and they aren’t really an issue and don’t need to be “removed”, but I’ve seen WAY too many awful things lately done by those who do not actually have residence in OB and haven’t been around here long enough to know their faces. Zero positives… several dozen negatives.

I should have added this to the above comment, but someone over at my house the other day had a great quote: “lately, it seems that a large faction like the theory and idea behind living in OB, but when it comes to take action, none of them step up to the plate.” I think he’s right.

Right on Goatskull. Can’t argue with that. It’s gotten to the point where I don’t want my wife walking alone at night. Wasn’t like that only a couple years ago. The tide has just taken a bit of a nastier turn, as opposed to good-natured, druken orgy-like enjoyment that’s it’s been for years before.

i was on newport on sat and saw our town folk chase down and catch Vic’s attackers. im a 33yr old single mom, and have lived here my whole life as did my father and grandfather now my son as well. in the 80’s and 90’s i ran all around the town all night long. i always felt safe, my father being a now retired sdpd sarg. didnt have a problem with it either. now with my son im not so sure. if you are from here you know that back then our town had a group of guys that ran out trouble from other towns. i dont care for them my self but we never had to worry back then. now they are all in jail. so the question is do i let my son and his friends protect our town in 12yrs? why our children? i do see our town coming together, but we dont need our sons in jail. how do we stop all of this?

The SD Mayoral Election in November is very important. Everyone wants a good police force, but no-one wants to pay for it. And San Diego is rich – it is ridiculous.

Small towns across middle america have better police forces than San Diego. A citizens patrol is great, but why should we have to do that?

Demaio will probably get elected and he will cut taxes and the SDPD funding and remain Doug Manchester’s puppet. Manchester really runs San Diego. Ask the SDPD, they do not have anywhere near the resources they need. They are frustrated too. And our DA, Dumanis, has a policy of not investigating alcohol related crimes (from Detective Tom Jacques in July).

As for Oktoberfest and OB Street Fair, I totally agree with other posts – why is there no security? How much money do these businesses make? Why don’t we force them to give 5% to security? Otherwise, we may lose these events just like PB lost the block party. At this point, it seems like a lot of people in OB would be OK with that. Keep the idiots out of OB.

As for mayors, Filner is 10 times as qualified as Demaio. He was a 10 term US Congressman and Demaio is a scandalous City Council member in Manchester’s pocket and that of the SD hotel industry. Filner would provide more funding for the SDPD and would hopefully force Dumanis to change her policies. What will we do when Demaio is elected and things get even worse? Some people may “vote with their feet” and leave OB to the criminals. Way to go Demaio and Dumanis.

The Union Tribune repeatedly deleted my posts (like the one above) that are unfriendly to Manchester and DeMaio. Now it is confirmed why Manchester bought the UT – to control information the way he controls DeMaio and San Diego.

The UT then blocked my IP address. So I had to buy a cheap digital subscription to keep posting. I also posted on NBC SD. Filner for Mayor!

This crime is not on the SDPD crime map. Why is that i wonder?
