OCEAN BEACH, CA. Tomorrow, April 14th, your mayor Jerry Sanders will stand in front of the Ocean Beach branch library and announce to the world that his proposed FY10 City budget will include no Library cuts. The Mayor’s budget will have no reductions in library branches, hours or staff.
Mayor Sanders will hold his press conference at 10:30 a.m. at one of the 7 branches he originally wanted to close due to cuts in the budget. But he heard us, he heard from Ocean Beach and the other communities that were slated to lose their libraries.
This is definitely a victory for the community of Ocean Beach … and for all the communities of San Diego.

The Friends of the San Diego Public Library applaud the Mayor for protecting essential Library services. These services are even more crucial in tough economic times, as more people must rely on the free services and resources available at their library. This growing library demand has been highlighted in recent news reports from the New York Times and NBC News.
As the City Council begins its budget deliberations, we encourage you to contact your City Council representative to let him or her know how important library services are to you and your community.
Library supporters are encouraged to attend and express their approval of no Library service cuts.
During last year’s mid-year budget revisions and during public meetings on this year’s budget hosted by the Budget and Finance Committee, Library supporters made it clear to elected leaders that cuts in branches or service are not acceptable. We must continue to deliver that message — now, more than ever, San Diego must maintain vitally essential library services.

I attended a meeting with Mayor Sanders on Wednesday and he said, “I got the message loud and clear” that the citizens of San Diego value their libraries and rec centers. He specifically mentioned the activities in Ocean Beach (the rallies and the OB Parade) as well as the valuable e-mails, calls and letters. Thank you OBceans for you support.
