OB Pier Camera Part of a 14-Camera System for Mission Bay Funded by Homeland Security

The City of San Diego is finally moving forward on its plans to wrap Mission Bay in surveillance cameras, including the camera the City has been threatening for two years to install at the end of the Ocean Beach Pier.

The OB Pier camera is part of a 14-camera security system funded by the Department of Homeland Security that are being placed around  Mission Bay on city light poles, atop lifeguard structures and on boat ramps.

The OB Rag has been covering the City’s plans for a while now:

Here’s the recent U-T San Diego article by Elizabeth Aguilera, from June 5th:

Video from the cameras — situated at 12 locations — will feed into San Diego lifeguard headquarters and will be accessible to police as well as state and federal law-enforcement agencies, said city spokesman Darren Pudgil.

The city received $385,000 to pay for the cameras, part of a $16 million grant from the federal Urban Area Security Initiative. It applied for the overall grant in March 2009 and got approval in September of that year.

The San Diego lifeguard service is the lead agency overseeing the cameras, Pudgil said. The video footage, he added, would be “of such quality that they could be used for criminal prosecutions.”

“We are trying to protect our water entrances from various types of crime, and that could include any types of terrorist activity,” he said.

Perhaps it will help end the open drug dealing that regularly occurs at the foot of the pier.

The camera is on top at the end, not looking at drug deals down below, but into apartment windows.

Your article gives me no information on what will be in view by the camera(s) in O.B. I’d like to know that. I wonder if only the ocean areas are covered.

PS: Please put the damned test below ABOVE, not below, “Submit”!

Keepin those terrorists out of OB.
Actually I don’t really have a problem with the cameras other than it is probably to much money for what they will be getting. I don’t really like big brother staring at me but they can and probably do anyway So I have accepted it
I actually feel sorry for the folks that follow me on twitter and FB their life must be really dull.
