Drum roll please… World famous Sunday school teacher, seer and drama queen Glen Beck will be making an appearance near San Diego this coming weekend. He will be appearing at the Skyline MegaChurch, Sunday, April 22nd,with two shows only at 2 & 4pm. Admission is free as long you bring a non-perishable food item for the “needy”. It would probably be a good idea not to wear an outrageous costume or come as a drag queen, because, after all, those Christians out there in La Mesa can get nasty. And Skyline Church leaders were heavily involved the fight as supporters of Proposition 8. Just sayin’.
What will Glen Beck say?… Will he bring his replica of the Oval office along to increase the drama? Will he announce that the date for the world to end? Will he call Obama a “racist”? Will he equate the views of Reform Jewish rabbis to “radicalized Muslims.” It hard to say with Beck, but you know he’ll do his best to scare the folks in La Mesa. And that’s the thing with Glen Beck: You really don’t understand him until you look at his performances as art that borrows heavily from the horror film genre. No axe murders here—just the promise that you and everybody you know is doomed unless….
One thing he won’t be doing… is any of that fake crying stuff, made popular by Congressman John Boehner, where upon you secretly hold a freshly cut onion near your face until the tears start to flow. That’s because we’re facing a nation-wide onion shortage brought on by the lack of migrant workers in Georgia due to the state’s anti-immigrant laws. Last year, an estimated $800 million in farm losses was caused by crops left to rot on the ground. With harvest time upon them, Vidalia onion farmers are begging the state for help. And it isn’t coming.
The Columbian hookergate scandal… Frustrated by his inability to make any charges actually stick against the Obama administration (and because he loves TV cameras), our own Congressman Darryl Issa has pledged to look in to the latest scandal, involving hookers, secret service agents and some military guys. He told the Associated Press: “Things like this don’t happen once if they didn’t happen before…It’s not about whether the president was in danger this time.”
The ultimate 9/11 defense… National Rifle Association President Wayne LaPierre, responding to negative press reports during the group’s recent convention:
Right now, there’s a reporter out there writing the NRA is paranoid and that I’m crazy. That reporter should think of what it must have felt like on that fateful September day in the World Trade Center.
Fletcher jumps party, communism wins big…. Senate Bill 829 is one of those Sacramento deals that would normally fly under our radar. But since some folks over at the SDRostra are putting up such a squawk about it; we figured that it was worth looking into. To hear Scott Crosby, President and CEO of Associated Builders and Contractors, San Diego Chapter talk about it, SB 829 is the end of the free market in America. This is so serious that it has even entered our Mayoral race as an issue, since candidate Nathan Fletcher missed a key vote upstate. It turns out that Fletcher missed a vote that the GOP lost anyway on SB 829. It wasn’t even close.
So what is this SB829, this Holy Grail of capitalism? It’s a bill that will undermine (via State law trumping local regulations) Proposition A. It seems that our local GOP types have placed Prop A on the ballot, calling it “The Fair and Open Competition Ordinance”. (You have to give these guys credit for good marketing, IF there was GOP sponsored legislation that would, say, institute segregation by race in restaurants, they’d name it “The Equality and Fairness to Negroes Act”)
Prop A and SB829 are both speaking to Project Labor Agreements, which is a structure for negotiating with labor in big building projects. These deals are good enough for private industry, but once a government gets involved—and organized labor is lurking nearby—PLA’s are the End of Capitalism as We Know It. So thanks, SDRostra. We didn’t even know Proposition A was on the ballot. This is what happens when you start ignoring those “signature gatherers” out in front of Target. But now we know how to vote, and it ain’t gonna be yes.
Banned Books make for stronger minds….We missed National Library Week (Apr 8-14), somehow. Here’s the link to this year’s list of books that weak minded people have tried to have banned in the United States, presumably because they favor less government interference in peoples’ lives, no doubt. Number One on the list is ttyl; ttfn; l8r, g8r (series), by Lauren Myracle. That’s not a typo. At least I’d heard of and could pronounce number three on the list: The Hunger Games Trilogy.

Skyline Church: Although the church’s address is in La Mesa, it is often described as being in adjacent Rancho San Diego, California.
And anyway, statistically speaking, La Mesa has more Democrats than Repubs. Also, there were several No on 8 signs in my La Mesa hood and none of the opposite. (Remember, kids, the homophobes were the Yes on 8 crowd.) Not sure why La Mesa has gone over to the lib side — lots of SDSU profs and journalists up here — but I like it.
Columbia is a university. And a district. Colombia is a country. Jes’ sayin’. ;-)
