First Cuppa Coffee – April 11, 2012: San Diego Drag Queens and Fat Cats Edition

The University of San Diego has a real-life controversy on its hands… It’s not like the fake manufactured crises that its well-heeled financial backers like to generate… In better times they call them debates, institutes or forums, and spend copious amounts of cash on them hoping that the great policy conclusions that emerge will reflect positively on the University. This time around USD’s marvelously wealthy groupies are throwing cash at stopping something from happening at the school.

It seems as though USD Pride, a student organization, has organized a Drag Show on campus, wherein boys will dress up as girls and vice versa. It started out as a bit of harmless fun designed to heighten awareness, yada, yada, yada. Now thanks to an article on the California Catholic Daily website (owned by the Reader’s Jim Holman), the angry alumni are circling the wagons, passing out petitions and yearning for the good old days when men were men except when they dressed up as women to sneak into the San Diego College for Women (true fact). The minions at the Daily website are screaming about “Perversion at its highest level” and saying mean things like “USD stands for Undeniable Satanic Destruction”.  The drag show will take place tonight at the University Center, Forums B/C. 7 – 9 p.m. There is no cover charge.

San Diego City Council Blues…. The Land Use and Housing Committee (2 pm today) will, once again, hear requests from local citizens to take action on the Property Value Protection Ordinance, which would create a registry to track every property that receives a notice of default, the first step in the foreclosure process. Potentially such an ordinance would give the City an opportunity to assess damages when foreclosed properties are neglected. Given that Lorie Zapf chairs the committee, the measure will be tabled. Again.  The bankers say “Thanks, Lorie, we love it when the taxpayers clean up our messes.”

Speaking of messes…  It seems that Todd Gloria no longer qualifies as a Progressive Democrat.  Empower San Diego’s political arm has declined to endorse Council District Three’s lone candidate, Todd Gloria. The Progressive San Diego website points out Gloria’s sellout votes on the Convention Center, among other things as cause for their disappointment in him.  We think that calling him the Democratic answer to Kevin Falconer, on the City Council (i.e., always willing to stand up for a photo opportunity), is also a good description of his political leanings as of late.

The Hoteliers Hijacking, cont…. For those of you who might not have been following the sordid sage of Our Fair City’s latest giveaway, here’s a little background.  Back on October 10th, Councilman and Mayoral Candidate Carl DeMaio put forth a motion altering the City’s municipal code that’s kept most of the details of the dealings regarding the local hotel tax free from public input or accountability. Now a bunch of hotel owners are secretly making tax policy and deciding where they’d like the money spent.

Someday (we hope) a grand jury will lift the veil on the connections between the rooms tax, the expansion of the Convention Center and the handoff of booking and marketing conventions to the hotelier controlled San Diego Convention and Visitors Bureau. And then this story can be added to the collection of tales of woe wherein the taxpayers got screwed and our City got dubbed ‘Enron by the Sea’, or, as we like to call it, America’s  Finest Tourist Plantation..

Breaking News: This can’t wait: Rep. Allen West (R-Fla.) says that’s he’s heard tell that there are 80, count em, 80 members of Congress that are Communists. That would make them about 50% of the existing membership of the CPUSA.

Do you have a link? Or is this from brain waves out of Florida?

http://goo.gl/PiljA there’s the link.

There’s a whole sub-market of retrograde McCarthyists waiting to spring to action.
As is true with Mr. Pillsbury, Alan West has decided to correlate the Progressive Caucus with the CPUSA.
So now it is okay if we progressives (I’m personally non-affiliated) equate the Klu Klux Klan with the Republican Party?

How is suggesting that 80 members of the house progressive caucus believe in central planning analogous to a group of people who terrorized and lynched black people? Wow.

No, because history says the KKK was the terrorist arm of the Democratic Party (aka the Party of Jim Crow). Can’t have those former slaves voting Republican now. And until June of 2010 the highest ranking Democrat senator and “the Conscience of the Senate” Robert Byrd was a member and recruiter for the KKK until he was 30. If you want to learn more about the history of the Democratic Party you should educate yourself with this but you may feel a bit dirty after…

And this gem from the founder:
“I have never voted for any man who was not a regular Democrat. My father … never voted for any man who was not a Democrat. My grandfather was …the head of the Ku Klux Klan in reconstruction days…. My great-grandfather was a life-long Democrat…. My great-great-grandfather was…one of the founders of the Democratic party.”

Not clear what your point here is, Bill. This history of the ties between the KKK and the Democrats of yesteryear have been well known for years. The Democratic Party’s hold on the South began to break up after LBJ supported anti-Jim Crow legislation, and when Nixon crafted his “Southern Strategy”. Ever since the white supremacists of the South have aligned themselves with the GOP.

Crazy. That is Allen West is crazy. Where have we heard from him before?

According to wikipedia the Congressional Progressive Caucus has 83 members. They pretty much have the same views of the CPUSA so West may be on to something. Plus, the CPUSA endorsed John F’n “I’m ready for duty” Kerry in 2004, and “The One” Obama in 2008 and now 2012.

Or maybe West read this…
http://www.cpusa.org/fighting-for-our-future/

“As for the wisdom of a third party, we have always advocated the formation of an independent people’s party at the core of which are the working class and labor, racially and nationally oppressed people, women, youth, immigrants, seniors, gay and straight, etc. It is essential for any deep-going social change. But its realization depends on more than our desire, more than our political-ideological attitude. Millions who have to be at the core of this party still operate under the umbrella of the Democratic Party, albeit in an increasingly independent fashion.”

NBC San Diego: USD Alumni rally in support of the Drag Show: The alumni group, “A USD For Everyone” recently launched a website which features letters of support from alumni and members of the community. Councilmember and USD alumni Todd Gloria sent a letter to the school lauding the school’s decision to support the drag show.

The grassroots group was created in response to critics such as Charles LiMandri, who considers himself a devout Catholic, he said. His son attends his alma mater on scholarship and LiMandri himself has donated thousands of dollars to the private university.

Sadly, because Todd Gloria is also gay, his opinion likely won’t count for much by those who are crusading to shut the event down.
