The "new" OB Library. New paint, new roof, .... (All photos by Frank Gormlie.)

We’re all happy that the Ocean Beach branch library has reopened.  The “grand” reopening was on Saturday, March 10th. Closed for months for repairs, it was back to busy as usual when we visited it on Thursday, March 15.

The library – really one of the hubs of the village – has new rugs, new roof, new paint, some new furniture … and perhaps, soon, will have new hours.  Especially if Mayor Sanders and the City Council glide some money toward expanding the library’s hours, which was promised.

Stopped by to check it out. Busy with visitors, that is for sure! So I heard we found some money and the libraries would benefit from some sort of unseen windfall. What is that about? Unseen?

I am confused. I thought the OB Library was to be expanded with the purchase of the Gee Law building….what happened to the money for the new library and what are the plans for this library? Putting a new roof on a building that will be torn down in the future???? Any insight is appreciated.

Debbie, the plans for expansion included keeping the original library and building on a new addition where the Gee law building is. Funding has been the issue now for how many years like 15 or something. Not sure where $$$ went. The library building is designated a historic building along with the Strand Theater, and some 60+ cottages on our historic cottage program. Therefore there are no plans to tear down the existing library building.

Thanks for info Pat! Yes, it would nice to know where the $$$ went. Allocated funds should be dedicated to this location, put in safe keeping and invested safely so the fund grows for the future expansion…..but knowing San Diego they raided OB’s $$$ for something else!

screwball hours. are they trying to keep people away?

9-7 M-F overlap the staff
9-5 Sat
Closed Sun (or 12-5)

Not too difficult, JERRY. The rest of the world does it, why can’t you?

I need a job and read 1000 wpm, and have experience in customer service and retail management if personnel is the problem.
