On the one-year anniversary of Japan’s nuclear nightmare at Fukushima, San Diego peace, anti-nuke, environmental, and civil libertarian activists will be converging on our own nuclear- nightmare-to-be – the San Onofre power plant. The action will be this Sunday, March 11th, from 1 to 3pm.
San Onofre Nuclear Power plant has the worst safety record of all US nuclear reactors – according to Nuclear Regulatory Commission safety allegation data. The plant has been the site of protests since the Eighties – but this could be the largest demonstration in its history, as more and more Americans are unwilling to support the nuclear industry after last year’s Japanese experience.
The protest gathering will be near the South Gate of the plant at 1pm. A march to the rally site is planned at 12:30pm at the San Onofre State Beach parking lot.
The San Diego Peace Resource Center – one of the major sponsors – has organized group bus transportation – leaving from Balboa Park (10:30 am) and from Oceanside (11:30am). (You may need reservations to get a guaranteed seat on these buses.) Call 619-263-9301 or go to info@prcsd.org for updates. The only available private sedan parking is over at the beach parking lot for $15.
The nuclear power plant is located roughly between Oceanside and San Clemente.

Germany has halted plans for future nukes, after the Japan disaster. The Japanese people have come out of their bunkers to demand no more nukes. Both represent extreme views worth taking notice of.
While many battle against US energy policies the real fight is to keep developing alternative, renewable and distributed forms of energy, along with sustainable grid based systems. We need both, and we cant afford to let right wingers sell U.S. out and claiming we “gave” our resources to China. The world will follow our lead, if we give them the chance. Ive worked on almost every continent to learn our examples matter.
good point- saying “no nukes” is less than half the battle, especially if we’re also saying “no wars for oil!”. We have to provide solutions, not just become another part of the problem.
One must also look at all aspects of the solutions, I know many people would demand we abandon the middle east and its petroleum exports in favor of Canadian bitumen, yet that is its own ongoing disaster in the making from an environmental standpoint.
