Violent Assaults and Robberies on Abbott Street in Ocean Beach Targeted

in Ocean Beach, Popular

One of two fliers seen around Abbott Street this week.

There are Warnings and Alerts all around Abbott Street in Ocean Beach this week.  And they are warning residents about a series of violent assaults of young men walking on that street late at night.  The fliers are attached to multiple signs and telephone poles around the community’s main beach street.

The more substantive flier asserts that “in the past 4 weeks, 3 local residents have been viciously attacked on Abbott Street. All were young adult men and were walking home alone between the hours of 1 to 3 a.m. All 3 were attacked in the exact same manner:

“On three separate occasions, the victims were walking on the sidewalk and as they crossed the alleys, a person(s) snuck up from behind and hit them HARD on the back of the head, rendering them unconscious! Their cell phones were then stolen along with whatever cash they had in their pockets. The violent criminal(s) leave their unconscious victim on the ground in the alley.”

Without being able to confirm any of this at this moment, we felt it worthy enough to assist in the broadcasting of these warnings.  There are no contact info on either of the fliers.

The first flier states in large letters:

WARNING!

Violence will not be tolerated in this community!!!

And the second flier (quoted above) states in its entirety:

ALERT!

Does anyone have the exact locations? I’m a block up on Bacon St, but wondering for the safety of my fiancee and friends.

All we know at this time is what is on the fliers. I spoke recently to the community relations officer for this area of Western Division and he didn’t know anything about this either.

I’d like to know where too. I’ve lived at Brighton and Abbott since 93 and there has been a huge increase in groups of drunken, unemployed looking folks hanging in the alleys along Abbott. More then ever, probably due to the economy. Most are harmless it seems but when desperate people band together and there is an alpha dog in the group…..Stuff can happen. I hope the victims are ok and that the perps are caught. I may have to start doing spot checks in my alley at night to see if I notice anything like this happening. The attacks sound like they are planned to be timed with bars closing and possible victims walking home afterwards. Too Bad.

So 3 different men were knocked unconscious and the community relations officer for this area of Western Division didn’t know about it? While it’s be good to have local media involved, this is another potentially black eye for OB. Combined with the 2 stabbings in PB, beach area should look real nice on local media in the next day or two. But seriously, can we hit the media and find this loser?

Officer Dave Whitfield is brand new as the Community Relations Officer for the entire Western Division – which is huge. With the cut-backs this City has experienced in terms of public services and personnel with us every day, the citizenry suffers. San Diego is so cheap – so the communities suffer.

I think it’s time for someone to put up spy cams in this area, this bastard must be brought to justice.

ObJon September 22, 2011 at 1:25 pm

someone getting knocked unconscience is no joke…. and the sneaky way they went about it is really scary!! We need to be vigilant here and get the neighborhood watch in action! Where do I sign up??? This is way to close to my home!!

A very close friend of mine was jumped in college; punched once in the head and died a week later. Since then, I have never resorted to violence but when I hear about this sort of attack, I grow angry. Brains not brawn always win, and I will contribute my wit to find this attacker.

That said, there are plenty of people in OB who will resort to street justice when pushed…they’re being pushed.

“That said, there are plenty of people in OB who will resort to street justice when pushed…they’re being pushed.”

It’s probably somewhat ridiculous that I also am thinking “whoever’s been doing this ought to get the **** beat out of them for it…”
“Eye for an Eye” makes sense on some levels but let’s not let talk about street (vigilante) justice or spy cameras let us take it a notch down to their level, I think you also share this sentiment.
“Getting tough on crime” is after all a Republican campaign theme.

I’m pretty sure there were very similar signs posted in that same area several months ago. But I’m pretty sure they dealt with some other crime issue. Attempted burglaries? I can’t quite remember. Sounds like there’s an active neighborhood watch there.

Somebody mentioned vigilance. Those of you that live along the alleys and Abbott Street if you get up at night and this may be hard to do but you may make a difference. Take a peer/look outside your windows that are along the alleys or your front curtains along Abbott. If you see somebody lurking around bush call the police.
You may make a difference. Also those of you that live along Abbott Street may want to install time lights that go on when there is movement along the perimeter of your property . Also when walking and this may be difficult if one has been drinking but when walking late at night keep your eyes focused about a block or two where your walking scan between the yard, sidewalk and between the cars. If you see movement between a car cross the street. If you see peering around a building or a lurking car be vigilant, move across the street, carry a pocket whistle around your neck or be prepared to yell out loud “HEEEEEEY,!” whatever!. Also if your cell phone allow it turn on the tracking device – allows your cell phone provider to track your phone and potentially the criminals. If your driving in the area look for shady characters lurking around the alleys or in your areas. It shouldn’t be like that in Ocean Beach but…be vigilant. Too bad the victims weren’t Bernhard Goetz.

Not to mention a good FLASHLIGHT, I mean on the level of what cops and military call “tactical” is a great equalizer without having to hurt someone.
Unfortunately such hardware is hard to find and xpensive in San Diego for some reason.
About 6 months ago I had one of these shipped over from the orient from an ebay seller, it was about $40 including postage:

it’s pretty typical of what cops might carry now, liked it so much I got one of these too, which represents current state of the art at a reasonable price:

which is a little smaller than a 12 oz soda can and is like a pair of car headlights on bright in your hand. It’s hard to comprehend how bright 2500 lumens is compared to the garbage carried at Home Depot or Target which boasts 65 to 130 lumens on their label as “bright”. I do carry it around late at night when I walk. If I shine it in your face you’ll see three dots for hours, not much else.

Do all of you realize that everything in this article comes from an unsubstantiated |source of a “Flyer”? Has anyone seen the flyer? Has anyone talked to the person that put up the flyer? Is the flyer true? Dude this is weak journalism.

Jettyboy – Yes, I have seen this same set of fliers multiple times, mainly in and around Abbott Street in OB, this past week. I drove around to ensure that I did not remove the only set. I probably saw at least a half dozen attached to various signs and telephone polls.

where i drove it yesterday for 15 minutes and saw nothing….except for drunks and people sleeping in alleys ….and an occasional pile of poo.

Can you posit any motivation for them to be false? As they don’t specify a profile of the perps, I don’t see a reason to fake this.

My brain dips into 3 thoughts

-that a lot of things happen in OB that are never reported and this is a personal effort of someone spreading news of something that they truly believed happened. I no longer believe an official investigation or reporting is more true than word of community mouth. The ‘official stories’ have too much of an agenda. I would rather disect the truth of what we experience and feel in the flesh, than official reports. Both should be questioned and respected. The problem, is the human desire programmed by our media to get excited by gossip and danger. About four or five winters ago, a guy I knew definately jumped off the end of the OB pier with a marine friend into huge surf at night. He didn’t make it back alive. No body knew it happened. It was as if it didn’t. 2 nights before the full moon this month, a friend i know witnessed under the pier, 4 housed looking white guys guys kick in the head a homeless man named ‘OB Tommy’, until he died. No one spoke of it, as if it didn’t happen. The same person witnessed within this past week, a fight break out outside 711 on voltire at night. He watched a man beat another guys head into the edge of the curb untill his head split open in horrific unimaginable ways. My friend stopped the last blow that could have murdered the guy. The guy walked off with his head split wide open. Definately no report of that one. Employees of 711 even refused to call the paramedics when asked to.

-3 locals, and nobody has heard anything. smells fishy, but there’s a lot of locals who don’t get thier names thrown around town and they are the usualy the ones that die under the radar. It could be the stretched truth of the definate influx in agression this past month.

-It could be a fabricated fear tactic into submission to get us afraid of walking around our community (which is what our community is) to pave the road for the gentrification of ocean beach. Ob exsists only because we think it does. Don’t be scared into craving a survellience system. If the postings are true, it’s exactly how we should be living our lives. Posting our news. Our lives that are happeneing around us. If the postings are true, thank them. Don’t fear them. Our world is not just the 5 senses the system has taught us to believe is the only truth. Full allegiance to just 5 is your own hand slap to the face.

p.s. you won’t see the signs if your driving round
yet, why would you drive around?

@devon to the 7-11 eleven incident why didn’t “your friend” who witnessed the incident on a public street use his cell phone to call for help or use the payphone for free to call 9-11, instead blame someone else for his weakness..

Reply

devon September 24, 2011 at 1:03 pm

he saved someones life instead of watching someone die
why are you naming him weak?

he doesnt have a cell phone
he was born in 1994 and grew up in the middle of nowhere
I truely doubt it was anywhere in his mind during this intense experience that they even exsist and have the ability to make free calls
I grew up with them, and it is not my first reaction
his first reaction was to speak to people within the building that he knew had a phone

What are you blaming him for blaming 7-11 for?

B Lame

I do not understand.

Hey I just find the portrayal of the 7/11 employees as so callous and noncaring somewhat unbelievable, as I have lived two blocks from it for about 18 years now and they’ve always had a pretty good crew.
The unavoidable point is that if 911 was really necessary there is a payphone out front of 7/11 and you don’t need to drop dime to dial them. It’s free.
Maybe what your friend is really saying is that 7/11 employees didn’t come out and stop the fight. That’s a lot to ask of them for minimum wage or a bit above. I know a guy who witnessed a guy beating on his G/F outside a bar, he thought pulling the guy off her and restraining him was the right thing to do. The other guy had a buddy around the corner, who jumped in and before he knew it my friend was on the ground getting kicked in the face. Fractured his skull around the eye socket and was rushed to the emergency room holding his eyeball in his hand hanging from the retina. Several years later he was still wearing an eye patch, getting headaches and couldn’t see straight out of that eye.
Amazingly witnesses ID’d the assailant and police tracked him down and he was charged with assault and my friend took him to civil court- all of that an absolute best case scenario for the situation- the judgement in total didn’t even cover all the medical bills.
While it seems a shame to have people stand by and do nothing while someone is getting beaten, it’s a crazy world and frankly I have seen so many instances where if I was a more agressive person I would have just knocked the snot out of someone for their rude boorish behaviour- so it would be unthinkable to see someone jump in the middle of it and get hurt when you don’t know what the circumstances were of the situation.

I saw OB Tommy yesterday. Before stating someone died online you might want to check and make sure it’s true first.Apparently your friend who witnessed his demise at the hands of 4 “housed” white guys under the pier was a bad acid trip or something.

I live right on Long Branch and Abbott. A neighbor told me about the flyers, I never saw them. I am a bit freaked…I always tell everyone that I feel so safe walking around and riding my bike here at night. I’m from LA, where I wouldn’t even consider going out at night alone. Should I be afraid? I’m not really that type. And I do agree with one of the postings above…if 3 separate incidents happened, and they were not officially reported…then how would anyone know that happened at all?? Who posted these flyers and for what purpose? Hmmmmm……

If you want the “official” crime reports for OB you can subscribe to ewatch which provides subscribers to filed police reports in the communities of San Diego. You will receive email reports throughout the week.

http://apps.sandiego.gov/ewatch/index.jsp

I am often alarmed at the number of incidents that occur in OB as reported by the PD realizing that probably an equal number are not reported, or dismissed as not warranting a report.
