A local OBcian by the name of Steve Marquez – an OB regular at Lucy’s and the Tilted Stick – was found floating in Mission Bay near the Ingraham Street bridge yesterday, August 31st by police. His body was in a state of decomposition.
According to someone who knew him as a regular at these bars told us today that Steve had been missing for the last couple of days.
Steve had a skateboard and was in his early 30’s, and frequented these north end OB bars on Voltaire.
If you know anything about Steve or what happened to him, let us know or call the police, 531-2000.
San Diego Police do not know yet the nature of Steve’s death. The case has been referred to the County Medical Examiner’s Office to determine whether it was a homicide or a natural death.
Steve’s friends are still in shock. They are grieving about the loss of a fine human being.
A Memorial and celebration of Steve’s life has been set up by his friends and loved ones for Saturday, Sept 3rd starting at noon, down at the beach between lifeguard towers 4 and 5, at sunset.

The decedent was last seen on the late evening of 08/24/11, at a local pub in San Diego. A missing person report was filed with the San Diego Police. On 08/31/11, a family was sailing Mission Bay near the Ingraham Street bridge when they found the decedent floating in the bay. Lifeguards were flagged down and they confirmed the death. San Diego Police were notified and well as this office. The body was transferred to the Quivira Court Lifeguard Station.

I think that would be very healing for all of his friends and family to come together on Saturday to celebrate his life. He always put a smile on my face and showed me love & friendship throughout the years. He will be missed by many, I feel lucky I got to know him in my life.

Steve was a really sweet guy…I knew him when I lived in OB between 2003 and 2007…one time he helped me out of a jam…I was freaking out because I couldn’t find my keys and not only did he help me retrace my steps and find them he had me totally laughing about it in the end!…a good friend and neighbor who will be missed…my heart and prayers go out to his family.

So according to this article, all this guy had was a skateboard and two bars? This is the worse reporting i have ever seen. This poor man has a family and all you can talk about is his skateboard? You should be ashamed of your self
Matt, not certain what you are referring to, but when this story broke – a full week ago on Sept 1st, very little was known about Steve. As the story developed, more facts and aspects of his life and who he was became known to us, the outsiders. We did not know him – although one of our contacts knew him as an acquaintance.
Don’t shoot the messenger. Since we published this, more has come in to more fully describe who he is/was.
It was because we published the original story – incomplete as it was – it allowed friends and family to come in and express their condolences. So, we could ask for an apology from you, but what the hey. We all are grieving over his passing, some of us more as we knew him.
I can’t believe that all the paper put down was that he had a skateboard and hit the bars. It makes him sound like an alcohalic. That is terrible. He did have a family and the boys preferred using a skateboard to driving because it saved them time and gas. It was preferred instead of cars or bikes. Why didn’t they write about the work he does how the community respected him. Did any of the news media or newspapers cover your memorial. I have been blown away by the support his friends have poured out from their hearts to my sister Stella and niece Jolene. I sincerely appreciate all of you..
That was actually my fault – I tipped off Frank to the story, and I only knew Steve from talking to him at Lucy’s every once in a while. But a couple of friends of mine were pretty close to him and he was a well-known, well-liked guy there. I thought he was a nice guy and wanted to spread the word, in the hopes that it would help find out what happened to him.
Reporters can only write a story with the information they have, and that was all the Rag really had – that a well-liked Obecean had lost his life. Better to cover it with the limited information available than not cover it at all.

I met Steve “EYE” a couple years ago when I first got to OB. At the time he was on Brighton, and as I walked my dog towards Dog Beach, he came up, asked for a hug and told me it was his birthday. Every time I ran into him after that, he always had a smile, kind compliment and intensity in how he engaged in conversation that I found to be endearing. He will be missed. It just makes me sad to see his family putting up posters and asking for information. In that same area he used to live in, people have had cat burglars breaking in. Are the two tied together? Probably not. But I mention it because there has been a marked increase in creepy crap that is affecting that one pocket of our community by dog beach. I want to think that Steve lived life to the fullest–be it what may. I want to believe that his death was a tragic accident. But we should not forget that there have been a number of mysterious deaths along the shore of OB in the last few years. There was a girl jogger who had ran the same route along Sunset Cliffs and suddenly fell to her death. No one talks about that anymore, and a girl was found about a year ago close to dog beach. Her friends felt her drowning was foul play, but requests to investigate fell on deaf ears because she was full of drugs and had a history of mental illness. Unless the deceased is a cop or perfectly good member of society, the SDPD have their hands full. I have to wonder if it is their priority to shoot dogs in the parking lot of Hodads during Farmers Market, play “high speed police chase” through our community in order to taser a beligerent naked frat boy, and shake down homeless kids, or investigate every death with equal concern and value, no matter the lifestyle or circumstance?
It’s been a 2 1/2 years since my brothers death. The rumor mill in full effect and still a topic with no answers. As the sound of his voice fades his memories live on. I read posts people have left, I read the investigators reports over again believing that I will have more clarity now that time has passed and I even review his autopsy report. For anything! Something!! A clue that will help me figure out what exactly went wrong. Life moves on but the families of loved ones always have hope. My brother and I would both be 39 years old today until March 25, it would have been the BIG 40! I love love love the hell out of you Steven. Me Gil and mom and of course Mia and Adrian!! I still cant go back to the mausoleum where you worked. Amazing, how I would visit you there while you were alive and working. Now its a different story, and so, I cant find myself to come back since you are doing something else there, other than working.

I know that both mattered so much to him.
One thing he taught me was… to not try to dwell on things, to move on, and to try to do so quickly. I just dont know if I was ever as strong mentally as Steven.
To just move on. To just keep on living.
I miss my friend. I miss being being able to call him, to be able to visit him at work and to be able to see him at home.
I can only imagine what he would have told me about my life so far!
I just miss him, because, he and I never had a proper goodbye,
and he never had a proper goodbye with anyone else who knew him and loved him longer than even myself.
If there is someone, who may know something about what happened to my friend, to a lot of people’s friend and to to their son, to their brother, what happened to him the night he disappeared, many of us would like to know in order to be at peace with him leaving us.

Steven taught me to celebrate life, even in death. He worked with Death every day.
I am so glad that he taught me how to stand up to others no matter what they say, and celebrate life.
