Funeral services have been set for James Cummins, 77, the Ocean Beach physicist killed July 8th when his car collided with an SUV driven by a 15-year-old traveling the wrong way. Cummins, known to some as “the hoarder” as he kept piles of newspapers and magazines in his 1979 Mercury, worked for SPAWAR for 54 years.
The services will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 14, at Canyon View Church of Christ, 4292 Balboa Ave., in San Diego.

Jim Cummins was an incredible person. He was my good friend Jaquelines dad. One might call him eccentric or unique, with his collection of newspapers and his old car. To get a chance to sit and talk with him, and hear his stories and jokes was a gift.
He truly loved everyone and let you know it. I attended his funeral. There was an endless line of people waiting to speak about how he changed their lives. I have never attended a service where so many people got up and talked. It went on for two hours and they had to cut it short and ask the rest of the people to talk during the refreshments, because they had to get on to the hyms and the rest of the service.
I was really amazed when the news asked Kevin, Jims grandson, right after it happened, how he felt about the kid who killed his grandpa. They were really in his face trying to instigate like the news does, and Kevin said he felt nothing but forgiveness. Jim passed his loving and compassionate attitude on to his family.
