OB Flashes – Community Bulletin Board

in OB Flashes!, Ocean Beach

We’re starting up a new feature here on the OB Rag, OB Flashes. Back in the day when the Rag was printed on paper, OB Flashes was a place for news and happenings around Ocean Beach, but we want to expand its original intent. We hope to start some dialog, a place for our readers to post their own OB Flashes and alert us and our growing community to things of interest that are happening in and around Ocean Beach.

Are you an OBcean with services or products you’d like to offer your fellow residents – and you don’t represent a big corporation or business? Is there a community event coming up that you know about? Or you might want to share the success of one that has already happened. Is there a local group or individual that deserve some props? Perhaps an issue that you just want to bring to light? Let us know, if it interests you it will interest others.

To post your OB Flash all you have to do is leave a comment. If you have never left a comment on the OB Rag before (or if you leave one that contains more than one link) your comment will go into our moderation queue and we will approve it as soon as possible. Be patient with us though, we are few and sometimes far between…. Usually, once your first comment has been approved you may post comments instantly. So come on, you know you want to… Flash us!

We will change the OB Flashes at the beginning of each week.

People of OB:

Students, teachers and parents need you to come to the San Diego School Board meeting on Tues., Feb. 10, when the board will take up a proposal to eliminate high-powered pellet gun training from 11 schools with military science classes (JROTC).

Chicago Public Schools, which has the nation’s largest JROTC program, ended rifle training in 1999 in response to the Columbine High School massacre. Here, after over a year of protests by students and parents, and recent news that gun violence in the community has taken the lives of three high school students, the San Diego school board will finally confront the issue on Feb. 10. You can help convince them to stop sending mixed messages to students and get out of the business of teaching young people to shoot guns!

Busloads of students from different schools will be rallying outside at 4 pm and addressing the board inside around 5 pm. They need you to help fill the auditorium!

Location: 4100 Normal St., San Diego. Arrive early to find parking.

Can we post ads???

OB residents – Does Scruffy need some love while you’re at work? I’ll visit him (or her) and we’ll go for a walk, we’ll play, we’ll drink water and have a treat, etc. $15 for about a 30-45 minute visit. I can visit cats and kittens too.

OB FLASH: Local business donates $150 to OB Library and local family to match the donation.

Falling Sky Pottery, located on Abbott Street across from the Life Guard Station, will be donating $150 to the Ocean Beach branch of the Library. The pottery had announced in early December last year that it would donate 5% of its pre-Christmas sales over a 2 week period to the OB Library.

The family of Dorothy Shumway had also announced back then that it would match the donation from the Pottery for the local branch. The Shumway family had donated nearly $13,000 to the Ocean Beach Library during 2008.

Today, Friday the 13th of Feb, is Patty Jones’ 50th birthday! Without Patty, there would be no OB Rag blog. She’s the techy that makes it happen.

Happy birthday, honey!

Hardly Earth-shattering news here, but FYI we recently decided, in conjunction with the owner and Manager of the O.B. Hostel, to light the Peace Sign from dusk to dawn every day, rather than just the one hour (8:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.).

Our thinking originally was that we did not want the sign to “dominate” the street, but now that the sign has “settled in” to its perch atop the hostel, we came to believe that we were missing half of our audience every day — the “night crowd” in O.B. — and that we should let the peace sign shine.

So that’s all. We hope the community, at least MOST of the community welcomes the installation. For what it’s worth, we are now contemplating another “sanctioned” installation at another international hostel in San Francisco, but are also actively exploring other potential “guerilla” installations on rocks in the ocean. All ideas are welcome.

Pass the peace forward.

Peace signs on every house. Hey – do you have a home-made peace sign in your window or on your roof, or anything similar that you display? Send a photo to us and we’ll publish it in an upcoming series of pictures of peace signs of OB. Send it to us via email if you can. obragblog@gmail.com

Being gifted with abilities to make things in various forms and mediums, as well as having a green thumb, has given me great pleasure over the years in giving them away to people just to see them smile. Well, my PTSD has me on disability and I am now behind on rent so I have to sell some of the things I normally give away for free. If anyone is into succulents, I have about 80 8″ potted plants to sell, please call Kim @ 619-892-7518.
